Stab At A Two-Deep
This is based on announcements to date of people coming back, and the absence of announcements of others who might still leave. If anybody has any inside info about personnel, I'd like to hear it. Obviously, we're still waiting to hear about incoming players from the transfer portal. Note that until it happens, I'm not assuming the two Chandler kids coming home from Northwestern will necessarily beat out veterans ahead of them at their respective positions.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
I notice you don't list WR Majon Wright on your 2 deep. I'm guessing that he leads the team in receptions next year. WR has all of a sudden become quite deep. Lots of options, but no great player that requires double teaming. I think Wright has more upside than anyone though.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
OL is scary thin and I find it hard to believe the transfer from Baylor cant crack the two deep, S and LB are also major question marks that could use some instant impact transfers.

Outside of Chief, does anyone else think Doyle will be 2nd string?

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Well Millen is still committed, although not signed. I would assume we bring in a QB transfer as well. But, as the roster stands now, Doyle has to be in a two-deep.Spaceman Spiff wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 1:42 pmLegit question, who else would it be? Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
I thought Joiner would crack the starting lineup. I don't believe he's short on talent. I do think he has been shorted on coaching. I would like to see at least another Olineman and DB with D1 experience come through the portal.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Currently there is no doubt Doyle is on the two deep. He was highly thought of out of High School, but I have never seen him play so I can not comment on his abilities. Something was going on with him and the prior leadership that never made sense to me and I would love to have some honest scouting of his talent and understand why he never saw the field previously.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Yeah, at a number of positions, it's pretty arbitrary, WR is one of the deeper spots on the team, and they're talking about actually using a TE (where have we heard that before?) You could well be right about Wright, but I went with the seniors, and the rest of it was a bit of a crapshoot. There are other players at other positions in the same boat. Davis Divall (the transfer from Baylor) was also mentioned. Mostly, I figured he's young and didn't play much at Baylor, so it's a case of show-me. Woody Jean (6-4 315 RS-Fr) also might be ready to make a move. On defense, Mykee Irving (6-3 320) might contend for a DT slot, and Malik Hausman has some experience at CB and might also be able to compete for a slot on the two-deep. The walk-on Rourke Freeburg played a bit under emergency circumstances at LB. At his size, I think I'd like to see him moved to S and see if he can contribute there.Woodcat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 1:19 pm I notice you don't list WR Majon Wright on your 2 deep. Looks like it's Doyle by default with Millen out, unless they can pull in a transfer.

Another Stab At A Two-Deep
Just random speculation after the latest recruiting/transfer cycle. I looked up some of Don Brown's comments when he was hired at Michigan. Lots of talk recently about a "viper" big safety/OLB type. I suspect we'll mix it up. In his comments at Michigan, he talked about a 4-3 being more of a base, with some nickel, FWIW. So, not knowing for sure who would play viper, I went with a traditional 4-3.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
I watched the tape of Logan Kraut, my God! I highly recommend giving it a view, what a ball hawking, hard hitting SOB! Looks like the perfect kind of defensive player for Coach Brown & staff. I’m betting this young man contributes right away...

I am assuming all those plays where from his Junior year or earlier since they didn't play HS football this year. He comes from the same area as Scooby did, maybe we can strike lightning twice in that area.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Just a couple of changes on defense, with the arrival of Jerry Roberts, and the departure of Jarrius Wallace. Despite the enthusiasm for Logan Kraut, I figured Gunner Maldonado's physical maturity and experience from playing at Northwestern would give him the edge over a true freshman.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Looks spot on. The one wildcard to me is James Bohls. Kid reminds me of a young Myles Jack and no way he redshirts. I think it will be interesting to see if Don Brown pulls him away from the RB group? I’m excited to see this kid play!

I just don't see any way that Jamarye isn't a surefire starter at one of the wideout spots. Other wildcards to me are Christian Young and Tayvian.

Transfers
I won't get into the freshmen recruits Fisch has brought in who will be available to play next year, because frankly, I haven't really kept track of which are his and which are Sumlin's. And, I don't think it's likely that many, if any, will get any significant playing time, other than maybe under the new rule where you can get your feet wet while retaining a redshirt year. But, it is significant that he's brought in nine transfers from four-year schools who have a shot at the two-deep. They kind of trickled-in, so here's a summary:
Offense:
QB Gunner Cruz (Washington St.) 6-5 215 Jr
QB Jordan McCloud (South Florida) 6-0 195 RS-So
TE Alex Lines (UNLV) 6-5 245 So
RB Drake Anderson (Northwestern) 5-11 190 RS-Jr
Defense:
MLB Treshaun Hayward (Western Michigan) 6-1 235 Sr
OLB Jerry Roberts (Bowling Green) 6-4 235 RS-Jr
CB Isaiah Rutherford (Notre Dame) 6-0 190 So
DE Jason Harris (Colorado) 6-7 240 RS-Fr
S Gunner Maldonado (Northwestern) 5-11 185 So
You're not talking the usual crap-shoot of JC transfers trying to make the jump up in class, but physically mature ballplayers who've generally gotten playing time in BCS-level major college programs. If the majority of them can handle the geographic, academic, personal, and football system transitions, that's potentially a pretty decent shot in the arm. Unfortunately, due to our personnel problems, at some positions it may be more a case of stopping the bleeding than building depth, but it's still a step in the right direction.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Kind of sucks for depth that K.Watson, Clark, Tapusoa, Wolfe, Cochran, Tilford, and Adams all decided to dip out. Not surprised but definitely hurts any depth we were able to gain with the transfers. Got to hope for limited injuries this coming season.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Yeah, not sure how many of them made the decision long ago, but was announced now for the purpose of putting out a roster for spring ball, or if there was any hope that some of them might decide to stick around. No starters, per se, but as you say we take a bit of a hit, particularly on defensive depth. So here's my latest effort:

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
I want to tell Chief to give it up to salvage what’s left of his reputation, but I’m enjoying the meltdown too much.
Does that make me a bad person?

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Just seems to me that when two staffs, including the staff that recruits you, can’t put you as the starter or back up, that this tells you that you might be wrong in your assessment

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
My favorite Chief moment past couple days was when he said "For the players: y’all can yell over at me. Only Jamarye did last practice. Come on! I love y’all. Show some love." I'm sure the players love you chief. It's not like you were fighting with a couple on Twitter just weeks ago telling the special teams guys their special teams coach sucked and that they didn't know what they were talking about. Chief is arrogant and really doesn't know what he's talking about. He probably thinks Doyle could win a Heisman
I said what I said and I mean it.

Coach woulda put Doyle in, we would've been PAC-12 champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind.

Sad thing is Chief probably legitimately believes that

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
The moron is such a whore for mentions. And so many keep giving him what he wants. Why?
I tailgated every Saturday in the Stoops regime with fans who had better takes about the program coming out their @$$holes than what Chief has managed to Tweet together since leaving these boards.
He's our drunk fan refusing to leave the upper deck of the westside stands even though the team is down 30 in the 4th. His opinions literally have no further added value.
So why quote the ranting fool? Because he has favorites and harassed the rest? Creepy, even among college kids.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
He probably convinced Doyle’s father that he has some pull behind the scenes with the staff and media, when in reality he’s always been a joke to both. But now Chief is stuck and can’t stop carrying Doyle’s water.
He’s afraid to be called out as a fraud. So it’s not that Doyle isn’t good enough, it’s politics behind the scenes of TWO totally different coaching regimes.
Yeah Chief, that seems plausible.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Chief said on Twitter he's really good at evaluating quarterbacks and has recruited good quarterbacks. Has he ever coached football? Just an honest question. His knowledge is shaky at best and often times anything he says is the complete opposite of the truth. He also is saying donors have reached out to him personally to ask about why Doyle isn't getting a chance. I'm sure they have dude

Speaking of Fisch, pretty cool what he did regarding the football team & our women’s hoops team yesterday!
Looked like a good time.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
In your opinion, why would he sabotage himself like that right out of the gate?
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?
Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
He's cheering on all the teams. Looks to me that the entire athletic department is getting more involved in social media and cheering on the other programs.
Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
I haven’t heard anyone mention sabotage. I think Fisch wants to succeed. Being at all three practices it looks like quarterbacks are not very good. Especially Plummer. Cruz might be average. I would say Gunnell was better than Cruz. Doyle did well in the first practice and is now being hidden indoors playing running back. Moore has had good and bad throws. Fietz has been better than Ashworth. I think Fisch had a plan from the beginning and he is sticking with it.
Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
You mean the staff that went 0-12 and the current staff that hasn’t won a game yet? Seems strange to go off of that. 70-7. That staff.
Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
I don’t personally know chief but I did see him speaking with Bryan Hand, Tim Kish, and Brandon Sanders at practice. If he is an idiot he is pulling off the greatest sham the world has ever seen.BeardownZonaZona wrote: ↑Sun Mar 28, 2021 4:54 pm Chief said on Twitter he's really good at evaluating quarterbacks and has recruited good quarterbacks.
