Me admitting that after yesterday this question has been answered. Foreign media can't NOT look away. And this is more so years in the making rather than only what was highlighted yesterday. We aren’t any longer a beacon of hope to world, there is no longer a better life to be lived under American democracy, and the rest of the world can't afford to not pay close attention.CatsbyAZ wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 10:58 am International news media WASTES way too much attention on U.S. news. And as someone who actively follows UK news, their publications are the worst offenders. BBC International's broadcasts are really just half-hour roundups of the lead U.S. stories. The Guardian's default homepage is for its U.S. edition; you have to click the upper-right drop down menu and select "UK Edition" to follow the current British news. And the Daily Mail's homepage prominently features a "U.S. Showbiz" tab. Are we Americans really that interesting to the rest of the world? In a train wreck sort of way?

I so wish I could relocate to almost any of those. I do like my pool though. Melbourne or Perth would be nice.

I could probably use a temporary ban myself, in a good way. Seven years of posting to twitter and it's disheartening to see it becoming a more reactive, hostile, and meaner space by the day. Don't even get me going about Facebook.

Re: The Random Thoughts Thread
There was a certain genius in using an obscure song like “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazarus for the scene in Silence of the Lambs when Buffalo Bill tucks his dick and exclaims “I’d fuck me.”
But here I am 30 years later listening to the piece and it’s actually a really great song.
So now when I throw it on, I can’t help but feel totally conflicted. On the one hand there’s this beautiful piece of artistic expression that I’ve grown to love, and on the other there’s this vision of a serial killer with his dick tucked between his legs, dancing around while taking a break from making a skin suit from his victims.
The human experience is fucking wild...

The fact that Ted Levine ever worked again as an actor after playing that crazy bastard so well in Silence of the Lambs is a miracle.

In case any of you who are my age or older want to feel really ancient, the son of the actor who played Stonehands in "Necessary Roughness" and Alvin Mack, the greatest linebacker to ever play at Eastern State University in "The Program", is a first round NFL Draft prospect as an offensive lineman out of Ohio State.
His dad was also the football player in "Beetlejuice" who asks the death caseworker what curfew is.

So, apparently turning 35 and expecting my first kid IMMEDIATELY has transformed me into an old man. I fell asleep sitting upright in bed last night watching ww2 documentaries on my phone and didn't even realize it. My wife was up with round ligament pains and crave eating at midnight and said I just sat there still clutching my phone and snoring for an hour. Then I woke up and acted like I hadn't been asleep at all.

It gets worse in accelerating revelations from here, so try to enjoy the ride. You'll start seeing your dad in the mirror more often; you'll hear him when you're the only one in the room making noises. These days when I get into the car I immediately turn into George Castanza: no matter what lane we're in it's the absolute statistically verifiably slowest one. At least I've learned that inducing a lane change is a lesson in utter futility.scumdevils86 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 9:30 pm So, apparently turning 35 and expecting my first kid IMMEDIATELY has transformed me into an old man. I sometimes imagine that if I was accused of a really serious crime and the media was combing through my online activity and somehow discovered this board, that the news report would sound something like...
On the online forum BearDownWildcats.com, a fan site and message board dedicated to the University of Arizona athletic teams, the suspect went by “Chicat” and posted constantly, almost obsessively. Thousands upon thousands of posts on a wide variety of topics, everything from sports and politics to cooking and movies. He spoke quite negatively about Republicans in general, and Donald Trump in particular, at length. The posts were profane, even sometimes threatening. He even had an extremely peculiar hatred for beloved college basketball announcer Dick Vitale, encouraging, and I quote, “that bald, half-blind bleep-stick to bleep off and die”. Disturbing new info indeed. Back to you in the studio Marsha.

I've had the exact same thought haha. I post some on reddit but I basically don't use any other social media or post anything on instagram or twitter or facebook...so this board is where they'd get their info to build my psychological profile.Chicat wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 5:28 pm I sometimes imagine that if I was accused of a really serious crime and the media was combing through my online activity and somehow discovered this board, that the news report would sound something like...

Social Media isn't worth it anymore. Facebook is overrun by hostile conspiracy theories. Instagram is for showing off your beach body. Despite all its negativity, bullying, and hyper-spreading of harassment, I'm still on Twitter. Every once in a while I review my past +2000 tweets to see if anything I've said is worth a backlash.
Turns out what I've gone after is Nu-Metal, Facebook, crappy Sports Radio hosts, Ancient Aliens, and thirty- and forty-year old man-children still airing their grievances about the latest Star Wars trilogy.
If anyone comes knocking it'll be the Star Wars "purists," most of whom I can outrun judging by their profile pictures:

That's just your feed, because they know you're a millennial. My kid's feed is something else entirely. Teens and tweens dancing terribly and really stupid videos of boys staring into the camera with captions like "you mad bro?" and "Got to heaven. I'm the only god up here." while some song I've never heard of blares in the background. How he finds it entertaining I will never know, but youth is wasted on the young.

Re: The Random Thoughts Thread
I am gong to put this here instead of starting a new thread. It's about medical issues.
I just saw an audiologist and I was diagnosed with moderate to severe hearing loss. I am not having a lot of trouble hearing yet because I can understand words. But parts of my hearing I can't hear. Probably too many Grateful Dead concerts and loving to hear loud music when I was younger. And I use headphones a lot.
I am lucky in that my health insurance is phenomenal (UMR, part of United Health Care), probably because I work in a hospital. If I stay working for my current company (doubtful) hearing aids are covered. I can get a once-in-a-lfetime Cochlear implants that are covered. Since this board has an aging (and very intelligent <smiles>) membership, or the members who help their family members decide. I was wondering if anyone has advice on hearing aids (I can use any brand).

Re: The Random Thoughts Thread
Catintheheat, I was born with a nerve related hearing issue. I have a moderate to severe hearing loss. I have been wearing hearing aids for decades. Here's what I do: I buy my hearing aids at Costco, and they are excellent. I bought the ReSound brand, but Costco sells other brands as well, including their own Kirkland brand. When I bought my current aids, the Kirklands were noticeably inferior the the more expensive brands, but I understand they are considerably improved since Costco changed manufacturers. I know cost isn't an issue for you, but they are also a lot less expensive. I paid $2900/pair (Kirklands are $1500/pair). You'll find that traditional hearing aid dispensers charge about double that for products that are marginally better, if any better at all. Remember, traditional hearing aid dispensers have big overhead, pay sales commissions, and have much lower sales volume. Costco has little overhead, pays no sales commissions, and has huge sales volume. My research told me the branded hearing aids Costco sells are made specifically for Costco by the same manufacturers that supply traditional dispensers. The aids made for Costco are a little different. In the end, they may have slightly older (maybe by one year) technology, but I doubt you would notice a difference. I suggest physically trying the different brands at Costco, and also at a traditional hearing aid dispenser. Once done, you should find the decision easy. I also like the customer service at Costco. They are open 6 days a week, barring a major failure (which I have not had) I can get whatever I need on a walk in basis. I also have UHC insurance. UHC sells its own brand, and they are useless. Forget them. Any premium brand (or perhaps Kirkland), ReSound, Phonak, Starkey, etc. should serve you well. Do a thorough trial process, and you will be fine, but resist the "sales talk". Choose a premium brand and go by what you hear.

I got facebook for one reason, to check out pirate BB and FB broadcasts TPTB wouldn't let us mention at TOS. Then my sister got on. Then SWMBO let it slip to a friend that I was on, so I couldnt turn down her friend request, and she made me connect with a music podcast page... and somehow I keep getting recommendations to watch some weird guy sort through some poor schmucks storage unit that he cant pay for anymore.
I dont do instagram, telegram, tiktock, Frank, pinterist, or twitter. I have a twitter account but i cant figure out how the damn thing works and I dont give a shit. I've probabably launched three twits in 6 years or whatever (I do try to teach the Aussie announcers for the tour de France how to pronounce "Martinez" but it doesn't seem to get through).
