Re: Coach Don Brown
Defense is going to bring it this year. Going to be a very physical, attacking unit

I don't expect the rebirth of desert swarm, I'm not sure total shut down D is possible against today's offenses, but I'm confident the defense is going to make a notable leap this year.

Not a big fan of NIL, but maybe more players will finish their college career if they can generate some income.
Scooby would have been a local marketing dream.

Re: Coach Don Brown
The Wildcats rank 44th in total defense, giving up 354.2 yards per game but are as low as 81st in scoring defense, allowing 28.56 points per game.
That's fantastic! She beats being in the 100's during the RichRod and Sumlin years.
Even more incredible having a highly rated defense with such a piss poor offense too.

Re: Coach Don Brown
I would say Don Brown is the best coordinator we have had this millennium by a large margin, with only Sonny Dykes remotely close.

Re: Coach Don Brown
Listening to Don Brown talk about his players makes it clear why these guys play so hard for him and is clear why recruiting comes so easy for him. Here he is talking about a guy who is not even on his unit, Will Plummer, today.
Re: Coach Don Brown
He made this improvement with Sumlin's wreckage and a few transfers. Wonder what he could have done with the
Schooler bros, Tony Fields and Kylan Wilborn? The D is ahead in the rebuild. You can build a program on that foundation.

I like him. Hands down best coach on the staff. I kind of think it is possible he gets the Cats to be the top D in Pac 12 play (top 25 in the country) within the next 3 years.

Takes 5 years to get vested in the ASRS, or something like that. ASRS has some odd criteria.
But he is already taking Medicare.

Fuck no, give him a raise that matches the UMass HC job.
Cats finally get a defense that isn't in the 100's.

I could get behind this.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?
Re: Coach Don Brown
Fisch has no hope without Brown. Not sure if this will really come down to money. Brown is from the NE area so I assume this will be a going home to retire type of deal if it happens.

I swear this football program is cursed. We just can't have nice things for long.

Re: Coach Don Brown
At 65, would he really want a head coaching gig?
Hopefully he loves the weather and figures he can be traveling and recruiting in cooler places during the summer.
If he really wants that challenge, it might be his last, best chance.
He has his system in here and hopefully a protege who can be promoted to continue it.

There weren't any in the first place. Liking moves he made in the offseason doesn't make someone a fanboy.BBQ wildcat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:12 pmAre there any Fisch fanboys left?Basketcats wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 10:21 amI was going to suggest this in my previous post praising him, but, I held back because I didn't want to ruffle any Fisch fanboy feathers.
Re: Coach Don Brown
The intangible aspects of the program were done above most expectations and he should be commended for the improvement we have seen there. Most reserved judgement on the coaching aspect. I will give him a little more time to get his guys in here but you can't get good players unless you show progress and I doubt most will see a one win team over a COVID devastated opponent as much progress. Next year will be critical and quite frankly Coach Brown is a BIG part of that.

Shit, huge loss
Re: Coach Don Brown
I guess that would be me. I suppose I figured there were a lot of factors involved in the lack of success other than Fisch's play calling, but the wazzoo game has soured me a bit in general. We won't have any momentum in the off season, he's losing his most important assistant, fan interest will be even worse than this year, can he keep the recruiting class intact? I don't feel very hopeful any more.BBQ wildcat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:12 pmAre there any Fisch fanboys left?Basketcats wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 10:21 amI was going to suggest this in my previous post praising him, but, I held back because I didn't want to ruffle any Fisch fanboy feathers.

Re: Coach Don Brown
Can't do more than this
Arizona attempted to keep Brown with a two-year contract that would have made him the Pac-12’s highest-paid assistant coach, according to a source.

Re: Coach Don Brown
Obviously, I agree. But, it's also true that when somebody has already made a major life decision, it becomes a case of being too late and "why did you only offer this when you got desperate?" He's using UMass as a bridge to retirement in his desired location, which is fine for him, but doesn't do much for them long-term. Personally, I don't know that I'd make a 65-year-old with maybe one or two years left in his tank the highest paid assistant in the league. It's not like he would be any kind of heir-apparent for head coach. We needed to transition to somebody younger, and this unfortunately forces the issue too soon. Almost a Homer Smith issue on the defensive side of the ball. In terms of money, what I'd like to see is that we'd have budget for maybe the third or fourth highest paid overall coaching staff in the league and see who we could get and then retain.

He will be there for sure. Funny though he never bothered to buy a house in Tucson that I have heard and his wife never even came out to join him. Doesn’t sound like a guy who felt he would finish his career here to me

So does the D fall apart or do they all play like wildcats and get Herm fired?
Re: Coach Don Brown
Isn't Herm going to be fired anyway?
