But just when we think Stanford is done and gone they always seem to come back from the dead.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Wilner has Shaw as the #1 overpaid coach in the PAC.
https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/10/21/ ... -yourself/
1. Stanford’s David Shaw
2021 salary: $8.9 million
Contract length: unknown
Comment: The figure is actually for the 2019 calendar year, according to USA Today, and represents a significant one-time bump from Shaw’s usual compensation. (Typically, he approaches $5 million annually.) Still, it’s a whopper of a number that places Shaw on the same level as coaches who regularly reach the College Football Playoff. It also renders laughable the university’s justification (budget woes) for attempting to cut 11 Olympic sports.
Verdict: Overpaid. Nobody is worth $8.9 million, except Nick Saban.
Guess Shaw is another Sumlin. Without Manziel, Sumlin was just a middling to awful coach.
Shaw had McCafferty, and look at the team now.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Does anyone have/know the spring football schedule?
Re: 2022 Season Thread
I don’t think they have announced it yet. I heard they would do that after the February signing day

Stab At A Two-Deep
Everybody's got an opinion, and that's what we're here for. Consider this an initial stab on a white board to start some dialogue. There's always the "(so-and-so) has shown me nothing" and also the "there's no way (so-and-so) doesn't start from day one." My bias is with veterans who've been in the system and have the requisite size and strength, unless somebody's got overwhelming talent (speed/moves) at a position where that matters even more than minimizing mistakes. (Also subject to glaring weakness at a particular position.) Also, if anybody's got specific knowledge that a player I haven't listed is, in fact, returning and should vie for PT, I'd really appreciate that info.

Re: Stab At A Two-Deep
Love seeing things like this, I have a few disagreements on who would beat out who but outside of arguing the unknown there were a few positional corrections I think need to be made. Shand is a DT not a DE, Echols an OLB or DE not a MLB and Warnell a S not a CB.TheCatInTheHat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 1:19 pm Everybody's got an opinion, and that's what we're here for. Re: 2022 Season Thread
Didn't David Watson enter the transfer portal??
I would put the UTEP transfer WR (Cowling) on the 1st team in place of Simpson. Most think he has a possible NFL future.
Seeing Paiton Fears as 1st string OT scares me. I don't disagree with the choice as he's all we got........but he got a bunch of QB's killed last year.

I feel the same about Jordan Morgan, Fears at least I feel like he has gotten better. Really hoping Jonah is as good as reports are saying and is able to beat out one of them.dmjcat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 1:40 pm Didn't David Watson enter the transfer portal??

Unfortunately, I believe that Jonah is an interior OL, not an offensive tackle.gronk4heisman wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 1:56 pmI feel the same about Jordan Morgan, Fears at least I feel like he has gotten better. Jordan Morgan was injured early in the season (SD State game?). He was never 100% after that......at least he had an excuse

Re: 2022 Season Thread
I was not aware of that, hopefully that is the case and he sees a big jump. Regardless, we lose two from the rotation (Laie and McCauley) and add are only expecting to add two (Divall and Jonah) so I am not sure how much of a jump we could really expect. Maybe Stovall and Reese can make an impact and maybe some of the lower level guys who have yet to play find a role (Jean, Magnuson, Stefanski, Langi, Eckhardt) can contribute.dmjcat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 2:36 pmUnfortunately, I believe that Jonah is an interior OL, not an offensive tackle.gronk4heisman wrote: ↑Wed Feb 02, 2022 1:56 pmI feel the same about Jordan Morgan, Fears at least I feel like he has gotten better. Re: 2022 Season Thread
Is knowing the system all that much of a benefit? I mean, that “knowledge” produced one win, and I’d be willing to bet the coaches dumbed things way down for certain position groups.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Yes and no. I mean, it's better to know the system, but the guys you'd think know the system tend to be less talented than the newer guys.
So for the long term, it's more about teaching the system and not worrying about who has it down. We're still a ways away. I'd be putting my reps into the guys who will be the best a year from now, not the ones who are the best today.
Re: 2022 Season Thread
It’s always interesting that these QB’s for the most part have never taken a snap from under center until they hit a program and system like ours.
DeLauria said he has never played with a TE in the offense. All those guys mostly were spread guys in high school. Just find the speed mismatch pre snap and throw. Here they have their reads and must understand the different levels for their throws.
No doubt DeLauria is the most talented and I do think he wins the job. Question is will he excel in this offense of struggle for a bit. Hopefully the spring game is a bit more serious and we can tell something from it

Across the board, I totally agree that this is part of establishing a culture. A good culture, experienced guys help internal development as much as coaches do.AV8RCAT wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 10:26 amI was thinking players with time in the system can help the others and more can get done in practice.Spaceman Spiff wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 8:44 amYes and no. That said, you need competition too. Ideally, that means the talented guys are getting reps and the experienced guys are pushing the learning curve forward.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Anyone know when de Lauria is arriving on campus?
McCloud started out 3rd on the depth chart since he had to finish academics at CFU and couldn't attend spring camp. Took him a few games to get up to speed on the playbook.

Yep, with the biggest one year influx of talent I've ever seen hit a program, everyone will have to step up their game. Hoping for a synergy we didn't have in the installation year.Spaceman Spiff wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 10:46 amAcross the board, I totally agree that this is part of establishing a culture. Re: 2022 Season Thread
I wonder what they are going to do with that turf? Seems like every coach changes things up a bit but I don’t know if Fisch likes that surface or not? I would think it is due for a change as it has to be 10 years old

Wasn't there some historical significance to the original grass at Arizona Stadium?
Hopefully there is some clone out there.

When Tucson National changed out their greens, the UofA took it and installed it in AZ stadium. For several years it won awards as the best turf in america

You can practice all week and all year on the artificial turf, and it's easier to maintain.
The 3 high schools where I live even in a cool moderate climate all switched to turf just for maintenance reasons.

Noticed on Desert Swarm a few position changes. Shontrail Key is moving to OLine from D and James Bohls is now a LB instead of a RB. Also seems Celestine might have a bit of a role as both a corner and returner.
Also of note, they mentioned us using a 4-2-5 or 4-1-6 scheme under Nansen.
