Re: 2022 Season Thread
If the examples of Fisch's bad coaching are so obvious to Madden players etc, I have to ask if an experienced coach really doesn't know basics or is there something else in play.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
If being a head coach was easy, they wouldn’t pay people millions of dollars to do it. And with that paycheck will come criticism. I’m sure Jedd looked at film during the week after losses and thought “We should have run ____ instead.” Every coach does.
If Jedd Fisch were to tell me that he made the right call 100% of the time last year and the players just sucked and didn’t execute, I’d tell him he was full of shit and deserved to be nowhere near a football sideline. It’s his job to put the players in the best position to succeed by coaching them up Sunday through Friday and then calling the best plays with the best chance of success at the right times on Saturday. We only won 1 game and needed an assist from a global pandemic to get that. There is just no way there isn’t room for improvement amongst the coaches.

Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Really, I'd have to ask him, say "Why did you call a screen on that play? He might give a reason why he thought it might work or he might say "the wrong play got relayed. I meant to call blah, blah"Chicat wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 2:40 pm If being a head coach was easy, they wouldn’t pay people millions of dollars to do it. And with that paycheck will come criticism. If he is 1/2 as knowledgable as you would expect any coach to be, these things should improve in year 2.

"should" being the operative word. I don't think there was any, or at least not much, improvement over the course of last year. A lot of us are in the "show me" stage. Or, I'll believe it when (if) I see it.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
He really needs to listen to his assistants. Those head scratching plays most certainly had to bring some comments from them.
Can't imagine Fisch is like KO where assistants are just there to hold the clipboard. Carroll for one probably wouldn't stand for that, although this will be just his 2nd season as OC.
Same with Dougherty as QB coach.
Fisch does wear a headset for a reason.

I thought the red zone offense was the worst ever in recorded history?
Looking it up, UA football was dead last in red zone defense. https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs ... eam/704/p3

We let teams score so we could get the ball back and then march down the field, get within the opponent’s twenty, and then puke all over ourselves. Brilliant strategy. At least no one will see them lose.
You are one of the worst teams in FBS, so you end up with the late starts and worst TV stations.

I absolutely abhor the 8 pm starts. Living in Gilbert, the 8 pm starts don't even allow me to stay through halftime and get back by midnight. And I'm sure there are locals with kids who feel a similar way. For a school that struggles with attendance, these 8 pm starts don't help. And honestly, it's one reason I would never consider buying season tickets. Too many games I just can't make.

God 8 pm are the worst. I live in Tucson and I can't make it past the start of the 3rd quarter for those games
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Very much agree with this. Coming from the Phoenix area you are forced to get a hotel and stay the night. You can take the cat bud down but that makes for a really long day but it’s pretty fun but if it’s a blow out you have to wait for the game to end and an 8pm gane won’t end until 11:30 at best.AzCatFan2 wrote: ↑Thu May 26, 2022 2:25 pm I absolutely abhor the 8 pm starts. Just a shame our TV time slots are so bad. Amazing we can’t get a 6pm slot for a PAC/SEC match up

Miss St isn't a terrible loss, just a reminder we could have gone after Mike Leach post-Stoops.
NDSU...I hope we win but there's a high chance it's better Fisch's 2nd straight L to a non-D1 team is buried.

Agree with that 100%. The thing with the shed was pretty bad, but just keep him on a short leash with no 2nd chances, and that then being fired for cause.Spaceman Spiff wrote: ↑Fri May 27, 2022 2:58 pm Miss St isn't a terrible loss, just a reminder we could have gone after Mike Leach post-Stoops.
Re: 2022 Season Thread
Arizona – Didius Julianus: Julianus is probably one of the most insignificant emperors in the history of the empire. After the Praetorian Guard (the personal bodyguards for Roman emperors) killed the preceding emperor Pertinax, the Guard put the throne up for bid. Julianus made the highest offer at 25,000 sesterces and the Guard proclaimed him Augustus. The problem was, Julianus didn’t actually have the money. So after 5 weeks of not getting paid, the Guard killed him too. A truly ignominious end. He accomplished nothing in office, did nothing important, and was otherwise so inconsequential that he likely would have been lost to history if not for this obvious blunder. But in spite of all this, he still gets to be counted as a Roman emperor. I think you all can see where this is going. Despite being a member of the PAC since 1978 Arizona has never played in the Rose Bowl. Really, their tenure in the league has been a whole lot of nothing. And they’ve had way longer to accomplish nothing than Julianus. Yet in spite of this whole heap of nothingness, Arizona still gets to claim to be a "P5 team".

This week I'm buying tickets for the Wildcat's Sept 10 homegame Vs Mississippi State. Who knows, with how speculatively chaotic conference realignments are, maybe this'll preview a future conference foe?

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Regardless of whatever league we'll be playing in when 2024 rolls around, a reminder of some of the less than ideal aspects of the Pac is available daily on the Pac-12 Networks. The whole thing is driven by football media rights, but as I sit during the off-season looking for something to watch, the regional nets are airing (LA:) women's water polo, (Arizona:) women's gymnastics, (Washington:) women's softball, (Oregon:) women's volleyball, (Mountain:) women's gymnastics, (Bay Area:) women's gymnastics. I'm willing to pay Spectrum for that stuff, partly due to some of the other sports available in that tier. But, as has been beaten to death, many people won't, so it hurts in terms of exposure. I enjoy women's sports a great deal, but only if it's live. When we're looking forward to Pac-12 football media day in one week and the training camps starting within a month, the only non-live sport I want to watch is a review of last season's football and a look ahead to the coming season. Or even a talking head panel discussion about the current situation. But, if you're going to show a smorgasbord of sports that don't draw well or get big ratings, you might as well show infomercials for air fryers and beauty products. But, that's where the presidents are at, so that's what we've got. On the Arizona channel, old programming seems to cater to the Phoenix audience, with what sure looks like somebody works pretty hard to cherry-pick a lot of ASU wins and Arizona losses across the board in all sports (even pre-dating our most recent 4-year 10-31 football mess.) Even under the best of circumstances, live coverage is typically the lesser games and the minor sports. Whether or not we're going to continue in the Pac in some form, they need to ash-can the regional nets and have a single, well-produced network to showcase the league without all the junk. Then, mandate that all schools stream their home games for non-network telecast men's and women's hoops, baseball and softball, and make access to each available for a single reasonable subscription price so you get all of your team's games. (I'm assuming a single conference network can schedule and broadcast all league football games not picked up by bigger networks.) It's pretty common-sense stuff, but apparently common sense isn't a pre-requisite for being a college president.

Re: 2022 Season Thread
Hard to say anything bad about what Fisch has done off the field so far. On the field? Different story. Still gets a pass this year in regards to W/L record, but we need to see improvement between the lines. Closer games, smart decisions in terms of play calling, and 60 minutes of fighting like Wildcats. Show improvements on the field, and then I'll start to get excited over Arizona Football again.

Vegas Insider has ASU at 5.5 wins. Apparently they have done well in the transfer portal. Big shoes to fill at QB, RB and WR.
Re: 2022 Season Thread
Let's say there are 12 units on a football team.
1-QB
2-Recievers
3-Tight Ends
4-Running Backs
5-Oline
6-Secondary
7-Linebackets
8-Dline
9-Field Goal Kicking
10-Punting
11-Kickoff Returns
12-Punt Return
U of A is above average (PAC-12 average) in 9 of the 12. Unfortunately the three they are below average on are all in the top 5 of importantance. Oline, Dline, Linebackers. U of A is actually good and has great depth in all the others
