Re: Mississippi State
The Cats are unproven. But, they played well today. I think De Laura to Cowing will be remembered decades from now. I would love to see Arizona Stadium rocking next weekend. I don't know what to expect, but I do know the Cats just beast SDSU when we were not the favorite. We beat them handily in the opening of their new stadium (that will always be a note for that stadium). I was impressed.
Yes, Mississippi State can go bad. OTOH, Arizona Stadium should be rocking. Look at it another way. Things can go bad and it becomes a season of development. But, if the Cats look like they did tonight, this could be a program defining game. I believe the Cats will beat Mississippi State. Right now I believe the Cats should be close to a top 25 team and will be ranked some time this season. They have the heart and talent to compete. The Cats have All-American talent on their team. Losing to Mississippi State would surprise me. The Cats are open ended.

Re: Mississippi State
As long as Jedd makes sure the team doesn't get overconfident after today I like our odds, but I also know nothing about how good Mississippi State is. Hope Arizona Stadium is rocking.

Yeah. We are familiar with the coach though. . .

With how the team played, and the game being on national TV, I expect a good showing from Zona Zoo.

Picked up almost 2-1 (+195) on the money
line yesterday. At that point number it should be close to 4-1, which is way to good to pass on.

Re: Mississippi State
The fact that the game starts at 10 pm Mississippi time should make some difference. I don't know what to expect from the Cats. I don't think SDSU is that good now. But, it is really difficult to measure a team after one game.
This is a statement game for the Cats. They are going into this game with confidence. The Cats have really good players at the skill positions. I would bet against Mississippi State with that spread.
I want to add that a rowdy packed house could make a difference. This could be a big win for the Cats and will turn heads.

Not that it means anything but MSU was picked anywhere from 10-12 in the SEC pre-season power rankings out of 14 teams.

MSU Preview
You can derive whatever you want to make out of a 49-23 home blowout of Memphis. But, based on participation and production, their lineup's below.
Bear in mind a couple of things. First, there's one underclassman on what looks like their starting offense, one on their starting defense, none in their kicking specialists, and 18 seniors in those groups. It would seem that this is a "go for it" year for Mike Leach. Second, they appear to have a fair amount of depth, as they played a number of additional receivers, defensive backs, and defensive linemen in the blowout win (as you'd expect.) The good news is they run a similar defense to SDSU. I'd expect them to be more pass-happy and effective on offense, though, with a couple of tall receivers.
Unknown what "Pac-12 After Dark" will mean to them, if anything. I remember Iowa's athletic department and fans kind of whining about it the last time, saying their team was going to "the edge of night" and all that. Iowa sent quite a few fans, many of whom were jerks, and it was great to send them home unhappy. Hopefully, the big crowd predicted for this coming Saturday is mostly a reflection of Arizona fan excitement, rather than an invasion of (yuck) cowbells. If any, I say don't let 'em past the metal detectors.
Offense:
QB Will Rogers 6-2 210 JR (78% 450 YDS 5 TD)
RB Jo’quavious Marks 5-10 205 JR (36 YDS 2 TD)
WR Caleb Ducking 6-5 205 SR (73 YDS 1 TD)
WR RaRa Thomas 6-2 200 SO (81 YDS 1 TD)
WR Jalen Walley 6-0 185 JR (30 YDS 1 TD)
WR Lideatrick Griffin 5-10 180 JR (60 YDS)
LT Kwatrivious Johnson 6-7 320 R-SR
LG Nick Jones 6-3 295 JR
C LaQuinston Sharp 6-3 305 SR
RG Cole Smith 6-3 300 SR
RT Kameron Jones 6-5 315 SR
Defense:
DE Randy Charlton 6-3 265 SR
NT Cameron Young 6-3 310 SR
DT De’Monte Russell 6-4 265 JR
LB Jett Johnson 6-2 235 SR (13 T)

CB Marcus Banks 6-1 190 SR (3 T)
S Corey Ellington 6-3 200 SO (5 T)
S Collin Duncan 6-0 205 SR
S Jalen Green 6-1 200 SR
Kicking:
LP Archer Trafford 6-2 230 SR (1-53 YDS)
SP George Georgopoulos 6-2 230 SR (1-32 YDS)
K Massimo Biscardi 5-11 205 SR (No Info)
KO Ben Raybon 5-11 185 R-SR (8-1 TB)
PR Austin Williams 6-3 200 SR (2-5 YDS)

That is one big LB group. 240 and 265? Hope they are slow and maybe we can isolate Cowing and Luke on those guys. Of course the key is on defense

Re: Mississippi State
Emotion is going to play a big part of this game, but it will be the mental aspect of the game that will matter.. What a game to see what the Cats can do. I thought the Cats had a chance to beat SDSU before the game, I don't know what to think now.
There are 3 aspects to a game and this is what I think going into the game.
Physical Aspect - MSU wins this one. But the Cats are very good in skilled positions. De Laura to Cow or T-Mac. And De Laura can thread a needle. Can MSU stay focused when it gets past midnight? This is a good game to measure Fisch's game planning. He got an "A" for SDSU.
Emotional aspect - This game means more to the Cats. They will be up for it, and believe the fans will respond (I wish I still lived in Arizona). This game can put us on the map for this. People will start taking notice. I think the last game that I looked forward this much was Arizona vs Oregon at Arizona stadium. All of us knew that game was for the Rose Bowl. Double OT loss. The MSU game may not be at this level, but the fact that it matters is a big improvement.
Mental aspect - This is where the game is going to be won or lost. MSU has a lot of experience, and things can go wrong because of mistakes. Yet, I am interested to see how strong the will to win is for Arizona. They have the talent to overcome mistakes. The mental part of the team will determine how far the Cats can go.
Arizona is special and developing. I believe we are a bowl team now, and not to be taken lightly. Fisch has brought in assistants from the NFL, the recruiting aspect is amazing. I believe he can sale the program because of the quality of assistants he hired, and his experience in the NFL as an assistant for some of the best coaches in the league. I am very optimistic for the program and would enjoy "The Fisch Era" if it takes root.

I think our secondary will do a good job and hopefully we get Stukes back. Biggest questions for me is how we handle our recent success and preparation for this game.
Also the emotion In The first 5 minutes should be off the charts. Don’t need kids doing things they can’t.
Another great test for our OLine. Can they establish the run at all against a very strong and experienced front 7

Re: Mississippi State
I think this is a very good point. Between our influx of inexperienced players and the holdover veterans who have been starving for a big supportive home crowd, I'm not sure how a coach manages that. No doubt properly handling success, expectations, and excitement is part of the culture Fisch is trying to instill, but it's easier said than done for young guys in their situation. On one hand, I've seen coaches tone it down to the point where a team plays flat and loses the advantage. Conversely, if the players bounce off the walls, they can dig a deep hole with dumb penalties, (especially Pac-12) refs trying to set examples, and then wind up with an empty adrenaline tank by the second half. But, I liked what I saw at SDSU, in terms of high-energy mixed with a business-like approach. Athletes rising to the occasion by the intensity of a big game and doing amazing things is one of the coolest things about sports, and we've really got nothing to lose. So, I guess you just trust to the attitude you've instilled, leave it up to the players, and let 'er rip.
Re: Mississippi State
MSU fans are very confident in a blow out. Very fixated that Arizona has only won 1 game in the previous two years and SDSU is terrible. Like bottom of Mountain West terrible. Typical SEC fan.

Re: Mississippi State
Because I’m trying to put off doing some work around the house, I went over to a public MSU message board site to look at the Arizona thread. Found these two nuggets:
“I went over to one of their message boards and
they mostly said they knew nothing about us but
they were going to win.” (Must be going to some other boards than this one.)
“yeah (sic), they are delusional dumbasses and when we skull drag them those rednecks will fade away in the desert heat.” (Pot/kettle situation from Dove’s cousin?)
The thread then devolved into a discussion on LSU save one comment from some rational sounding guy. I’m in the camp of doubting UofA will win the game, but at least I feel we are back to the days of having a puncher’s chance. After the last few dismal years, that feels pretty good.

Re: Mississippi State
I don’t know if we can win. I definitely don’t think MSU will be nearly as basic & boring on offense as SDSU was and I see them putting up some big plays on our defense.
I also don’t think we are just going to roll over if we get behind like we would have last year or the year before. I think we keep it close, and if it’s close late anything can happen.

Feels like the perfect trap game for them with eyes on next week against LSU, plus a really late game. I don't see that massive chip on our shoulder going away after one W.

As someone who travels a lot, I can say with 100% certainty, time change is so much easier to adapt going west vs east. Especially when you are young.
The lateness of this game is not as big of an advantage as some might think.
Now a west coast team going to the East Coast for an early game..... that's a different story.....

I read most of us saying we our optimistic we can play with them based off of what we saw in game 1. I didn’t see any guarantees from our side unless I missed a post. Just talking about what we need to do to have a chance.
I guess if you play in the SEC you must first genuflect.
