Assuming we win the first game, the game vs the Aztecs should be a very good one and it will tell us a lot

This is a fantastic field for Maui. Many of these teams could be in the NCAA tourney.

You’re joking right? Have you seen Louisville? Lost to Bellarmine, Wright State, and Appalachian State. Also lost their exhibition game against Leonor Rhyne (D2).Catintheheat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 11:41 amAllof the teams could make the tourney.Beachcat97 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 11:27 am This is a fantastic field for Maui. They look pathetic. If anyone in Maui loses to Louisville it will be embarrassing.

Only way Louisville makes the tourney is the acc tourney ship
Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

How much does Kenpom still factor in last year's performance at this point
Re: 2022 Maui Invitational: Bracket, schedule, teams
It is my understanding that preseason rankings become decreasingly important as the season goes on but that do not "disappear" until mid to late January. He gives a rather lengthy discussion of this on his blog.

Re: 2022 Maui Invitational: Bracket, schedule, teams
SDSU is a legit contender, based on what I've seen of them. This game will give us a real indication of where we're currently at, and maybe of where we could eventually get.
Re: 2022 Maui Invitational: Bracket, schedule, teams
We won’t be as good as we can be u til we get consistent scoring off the bench. Other than Henderson no one scored and that could prove to be to big of a drop off from our starters in big games

Was Bal hurt or just in the doghouse?
Re: 2022 Maui Invitational: Bracket, schedule, teams
Agreed. Versus the Bearcats the starters averaged almost 30 minutes. Not sure it that's what Tommy was hoping for going into this 3 day tourney.
Henderson showing himself worthy of starters minutes so there is that bright spot.

True. Henderson is looking like a very solid bench option, but we need Bal, Boswell and Veesaar to produce. I'm gonna trust that these three will improve over the course of the season.

Re: 2022 Maui Invitational: Bracket, schedule, teams
It's really exciting watching the players develop and show what they can do. Ramey is a real plus to the roster, I see a little Kemba Walker in him. We're gonna need him to rise to the occasion because SDSU and Arkansas are no joke. I'm worried about our confidence levels on this court. Last year, there was no question who was our leader; he had boatloads of confidence. We still run our sets quasi passively at times, it reminds of me of Houston and how they seized upon the opportunity. I'm not sure if Lloyd has learned from that experience yet. We still lack confidence and are a little tentative on the court. I could see it in Larsson and a few of the other players.
Henderson is solid. I like his offensive ability more than DT's.He reminds me of Stanimal a little bit. There's a composure to his game, a patience that SJ had that I see. It's really nice. I just wish he had the defensive side of DT.
As other posters have noted, we need Veesaar and we need him bad. It's early in the season, but from what I've observed, the moment seems to big for him. We seriously need his contributions on defense. With his length and athleticism, he can help alter and block shots as a rim protector. The Landers Nolley situation will be a recurring one, because we don't have an athletic combo forward to switch on players of his caliber. It definitely needs to be addressed for next year. I was hoping Bal could focus on defense and really develop there, but I've yet to see that yet.
Based on KenPom, we dropped to the 50's on defense from the 30's prior to the game. We have to tighten up a bit. The impact defensive players that were schooled by the previous regime are gone and so we're gonna have to find an identity on defense, or else we're gonna suffer the same fate in the tournament as last year. I know that CTL understands defense, but I'm not sure if he can teach it, as he is an offensively minded coach. He may need to bring in someone who can shore it up. SDSU will be a good test. They pride themselves on their depth and believe that they will wear us down. I don't think that's going to happen because we can go deep into our bench as well, I'm just concerned about containing perimeter shooters and defense to make sure our leads don't evaporate. I hope we make the championship game, I think that Arkansas (or Creighton) will teach us a lot about ourselves if we get there.
Oh, and Zu is a beast. And the great thing is we haven't seen the best of him yet.

Re: 2022 Maui Invitational: Bracket, schedule, teams
I thought he was just playing like shit. Working himself out of the rotation especially with Ramey back and Henderson playing so well.
Larsson had a bad game too, but at least he has the potential to put a lot of points on the board and play some killer defense.
I have 0 hope of Veesar not turning into Kirk Walters this season, but lots of potential as an upperclassmen if he hits the weight room. At least we knew Anderson was a major project, but Veesar was highly touted.

Winning against Cinci was big.
No matter what we are playing 2 very good teams tonight / tomorrow.
We should have a better idea of who/what this team is by Thanksgiving
