Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
USMNT roster for September friendlies. We have 2 matches left before the November World Cup (Japan, Saudi Arabia).
GOALKEEPERS (3)
Ethan Horvath - Luton Town
Sean Johnson - New York City FC
Matt Turner - Arsenal
DEFENDERS (9)
Reggie Cannon - Boavista
Cameron Carter-Vickers - Celtic
Sergiño Dest - AC Milan
Aaron Long - New York Red Bulls
Chris Richards - Crystal Palace
Joe Scally - Borussia Mönchengladbach
Sam Vines - Royal Antwerp
DeAndre Yedlin - Inter Miami CF
Walker Zimmerman - Nashville SC
MIDFIELDERS (6)
Kellyn Acosta - LAFC
Tyler Adams - Leeds United
Luca de la Torre - Celta de Vigo
Weston McKennie - Juventus
Yunus Musah - Valencia
Malik Tillman - Rangers
FORWARDS (8)
Brenden Aaronson - Leeds United
Paul Arriola - FC Dallas
Jesús Ferreira - FC Dallas
Jordan Morris - Seattle Sounders FC
Ricardo Pepi - Groningen
Christian Pulisic - Chelsea
Gio Reyna - Borussia Dortmund
Josh Sargent - Norwich City
Jedi and Weah are injured. Steffen is coming back from an injury. But he has been playing bad for the last 4 months.
Here is my choice for World Cup starters, assuming Berhalter plays a 4-3-3.
Goalkeeper - Matt Turner
Center Backs - Walker Zimmerman, Chris Richards
Wing Backs - Sergino Dest, Antonee "Jedi" Robinson
Midfielders - Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie
Forwards - Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna Although I don't have a problem starting Aaronson or Weah.
Striker: Josh Sargeant He learned how to score. Although I believe Berhalter will play Ferreira.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Let’s go USA. Might be the most important match in the Group as Iran is considered the weakest and England the strongest. US and Wales should be fighting for the coveted 2nd place to get you out of the group.
Wales will play more of a counter attack game based on their history. For the US there are two areas of the starting line up that will be interesting to see what Berhalter does:
Up Front- I’m thinking it will be Pulisic, Weah and Ferreira but Reyna could easily start because of his ability to create in tight spaces.
Center back alongside Zimmerman - between Ream, Carter-Vickers and Long. I think it will be Ream because of his excellent form with Fulham but wouldn’t be shocked to see Long start as he provides pace to keep up with Wales speedy frontline.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Starting lineup is Turner, Robinson, Dest, Zimmerman, Ream, Adams, MeKennie, Musah, Pulisic, Weah, and Sargeant.
I don't have a problem with this starting lineup. Ream seems to be in the best form he's been in awhile. Our center backs are our weakpoint. Adams is a stud and the best player on the team. The midfield and forwards are very good. The fact that Aaronson and Reyna aren't starting says a lot.

2 yellow cards in the first 15 minutes. One on Dest and one on McKennie.

The refs do not want the US to win.

Pulisic great pass to Weah for the goal.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Beautiful goal. Sargent with holdup play springing Pulisic, who puts a perfect weighted ball to Weah, who finishes with confidence. 45 min to go.

US seems to be standing around more in the second half. They don't seem to have any energy.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
What is bad is the US is a much better team. I blame this on Berhalter.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Wales has had so many injuries, how will they field a team next game?

I don't know jack shit about soccer- but is a player required to go down in agony on every possession?

Well, that was an unsatisfactory result. Hopefully we have a little more fire in our belly next game

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Giving up that PK was just a killer. No need to do that with Bale having his back to the goal.
We got pushed around in the second half and gave away possession way too often.
Hated the sub choices except for Aronson.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
We had them. But youth and inexperience got us in the end. We were the better team, but let Wales off the hook. At least we managed a point.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
This USMNT is like Sean Miller’s teams. Good enough players that they are more focused on their pro club teams but not actually good enough that they deserve to do so.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Wales couldn’t hang of for one more minute?
Shitbags.
Oh well.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Iran winning is a good result for the US. A tie would've been better, but now, assuming England takes care of Wales, all we need to do to advance is beat Iran. We could lose by 10 today and still advance if we beat Iran and England either ties or beats Wales.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Right. All we need to do is beat Iran in a game where Iran will know all it needs is a draw to advance.AzCatFan2 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 6:42 am Iran winning is a good result for the US. If Wales hangs on, all we might’ve needed was a draw against Iran to go through (even when we lose to England).
Those two things are totally different, particularly in the context of (and I get transitive property isn’t necessarily a thing one game to another) Iran was significantly better than Wales, so the expectation of Win v draw there will likely be a big, big difference.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Christian should probably come off the bench in this one (for a couple reasons), but we’ll probably run him out there for 90 minutes of injuries in our pending lopsided loss.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
I was flipping through channels on Sling yesterday, and the 5 seconds I saw 2 players were fighting for the ball, then the next thing you know one player goes down like he was just shot with a bean bag gun. Surprised he wasn't carted off on a stretcher.Alieberman wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 1:59 pm I don't know jack shit about soccer- but is a player required to go down in agony on every possession?
Flop rules really need to be enforced in all sports.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
As another funny subplot to tonight’s game, as far as I can tell, a draw basically has no value to us; we would still need to win against Iran.

Pulisic hits the crossbar. US playing with more confidence.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Well that had to go down as one of the worst subs in the group stage.
Alejandro Balde. Sorry, kid, but welcome to the game.

Need to get that final pass in for a score.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
I feel like I’ve seen this game a million times.
5 min goes by, nothing happens. 5 min goes by, nothing happens.
Finally we realise it’s the 70th minute and put the pedal to the metal…and Iran sees out the game.
