Re: The 2022-2023 Season Thread
Before talking about seeding or the tourney there is a lot of basketball still to play. Tonight is a huge game and the last weekend will determine where we end up for both seeding and PAC 12 standings.

I wouldn't underestimate the Pac tourney's bearing on seeding. Might matter more this year when the statistical difference between AZ and ucla is looking to be very thin.

Whoa, didn't realize that question was going to raise up such hackles
Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

We're still 9th in the Net. Does the committee still use the Net to determine seeds?

Much more concerned with staying in the West than whether we are a 1 or 2 seed. Gotta sweep UCLA to ensure we are the most deserving between us of that West slot.

I like our chances in that match-up this year. Think we've got some different looks to throw at them, and our guys would be excited for a rematch.ChooChooCat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 12:35 pmI just want a 1 seed to stay the hell away from Houston.CardiacCats97 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 11:42 amMuch more concerned with staying in the West than whether we are a 1 or 2 seed. I love our chances to get to the FF this year, pretty much regardless of match up. Just think our older players are steady and hungry, and bringing Larsson off the bench has been a key adjustment. This team can do big things.
Re: The 2022-2023 Season Thread
The Committee uses NET rankings as a guide. But it's not a Bible. Net is just a ranking. If Team A has more Q1 wins than Team B, but Team B has a higher NET because it beat more Q3 teams versus Q4 wins for Team A, the Committee will likely give Team A a higher seed. Better quality wins, and wins over Q3 and Q4 teams may change NET ratings, but the Committee sees them all as the same. The thing that's dragging our NET down right now really is the WSU home loss, which is Q2. All of UCLA's losses for example, are Q1.
Staying out west would really be a nice advantage for us. We own Vegas when we play there. We can afford a loss in Pauley, as long as win 3 in Vegas. Win out the regular season, and it's going to be difficult not to put us in the west.

Gonna be fun if our game at Pauley becomes the de facto Pac title game.
Re: The 2022-2023 Season Thread
Honestly I don't think we are the number 4 team in the country. I would say we are comfortably in the top 10-12. The other thing is that if we played every team ranked anywhere above us in a 3 game series they would not sweep us. This tells me we got a chance no matter where we are ranked or seeded to make it far. If we keep this defensive intensity up I will surely be forced to reconsider. That is the big change in this team. Ramey and Larson have dialed it way up.
I think Ballo has been figured out and he is turning over the ball too much. I think the passers need to keep the ball high for him and stop bounce passing below his knees. Save that for ZU. LOL.

This might help a bit with keeping our foreign athletes. I had never heard of the 5980 fund. The fund provides supplemental academic awards to student-athletes up to the established maximum of $5,980 per year. All Arizona student-athletes are eligible so long as they maintain good academic performances. We just had an anonymous donor cover all 500 + student athletes and walk-ons for 2 years. Approximately a $6 million dollar donation.
Didn't know where to put this but thought this was good news for the kids of all sports.

There is no dominant team this year.
We are among the top 12 teams who have a legitimate shot this year
Of these top 12- there is no team that I believe to be CLEARLY better than us. And vise versa..... we are not clearly better than any of these teams.
Matchups.... Matchups.... Matchups

Re: The 2022-2023 Season Thread
The improvement on D is what is driving the resurgence in the the O, in my opinion. We're getting more live-ball turnovers, and forcing miss shots, which is allowing us to run. If we can be top 25 in D efficiency, we are one of the top 5 teams in the nation.

Baylor is the team that I'd prefer to miss. They're a flawed team but just so much damn firepower in that backcourt.
Re: The 2022-2023 Season Thread
I think the type teams that could beat us are the ones with very strong penetrating guards.

We can, we just need to string 6 good to great performances together.
It's the same for any of the dozen or so teams that can win it all this year. No team has a huge margin for error this year.

The team the last three weeks is Championship caliber. As long as the defense is there, the guards can hit open 3s and the bigs stay out of foul trouble no one scares me. Gotta see how this team can do if one of those ain't working before the tournaments
