Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

Meanwhile, Arkansas appears to be going down. Maybe MuscleMan will rip off his pants and moon the crowd tonight.

Isn't that what happens? If there isn't a dominant team, UConn wins it?

So it makes me feel a little better that we gave Princeton their toughest game.

It's like one of those things that you say when you are a dad that you think should never come out of anyone's mouth like, "don't dump the sand out of your shoes into your brothers eyes"
Arizona State might have the most surprisingly anemic history in men's basketball of any program that you might think is better than it is.

Texas: crushing ALL the passing lanes on defense; wide open in the lane on offense.

Xavier: the closer to the basket the less likely the ball is going in.

Didn’t you say his teams were built for March?

Anyway, it wasn’t a typical tourney for CSM. He played a bunch of zone and his offense was wide open. This year he just ran into a much more talented team with a bunch of players that were holdovers from last year when they finished 7th in the Big East and missed the tourney for the fourth year in a row.

Not sure what he did to hurt you so bad but it may be time to let it go.

Works for me. It was already bad enough to lose in the first round. Sean getting to a FF this soon after failing to ever take us there might've been enough to make me sick.

And, that significantly increasing parity actually makes a one-and-done tourney less and less likely to reward the best team!

Like most live TV, money buys viewers for advertisers, and rewards spectacle rather than true value!

On Poor Seeding

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

People always seem to go "wow...look at the upsets", or "hey...what a Cinderalla story", but they never seem to discuss what a piss-poor seeding job the committee does. Everybody loves Cinderella, and everybody loves feeling smart picking the annual 12/5 upset. But it seems to me (and I'm not going to invest hours of research when it requires much more than that) that the process is unnecessarily flawed. 12 members on the selection committee, including conference commissioners and school athletic directors. Only 5 from P5 schools, so no conspiracy theory there. But none of them know shit about anything outside their own conferences, and they've got no basis for comparison. They inherit the methodology that didn't work from the previous committee and plug teams into it; the classic definition of insanity. It should be driven by (different) statistics. I don't have the answers to what should be a years-long detailed analysis; I'm just posing the problem statement. Maybe it involves historical success of a certain finish in a certain conference over the last five years, maybe it's heights and weights of starting players, maybe it's bank balances of certain referees. Who knows? But I'm sure there's more and better statistical correlation than just "somebody got hot", "somebody got motivated to win for a dying fan", or "somebody just decided to start playing defense." Maybe you hire somebody who sets odds with real money on the line. But I think sports books are structured to make plenty of money, regardless, so they're not necessarily motivated to spend more money to be more accurate. Maybe fewer people would gamble. And likewise, the NCAA is making plenty of TV revenue, so why bother? (The bad news is that upsets are a crowd-pleasing ratings-grabber, so there may actually be a motivation for poor seeding.) In any event, I'd like to see different people, a different process, and different data used.

All one has to do to expose the deeply flawed reasoning involved here is to look back at multiple playoff series in the NBA where the eventual series winner has LOST the first game - many times in a blowout - to demonstrate that the inherent problem in the college playoff is the one-and-done format.

Period!

This might be the last tough team Arizona has had.

There have been tough mf'er players that have played after, but no team collectively was as tough as that team, or has even come close to being tough.

Top 8 seeds should get a first round bye or maybe like Baseball does and have double elimination and get to play at home. If you really want to crown the best team.

With even more parity than ever before because of the transfer portal and having good players staying 2 years at the most if you are lucky, what real advantage do the top seeds have on neutral courts? The answer is not much.

But it won't change because the NCAA wants to preserve the "Madness" because it means buku ratings and buku bucks.

I recall in all of their infinite wisdom, one year the NCAA decided to make the softball championship a single game. Even though UA had the better team, and would have won 2 out of 3 they lost the one game. Can't remember if it was FSU, or UCLA. Maybe the Tanya Harding year?

But UA softball was really fucked over.
