Why are we shooting 3's down 1?
Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
Congrats to FAU. Great game.
I did not like our final play...........should have been something going to the bucket.

38% from the field isn't going to cut it against good teams.
Good game though.

Our penultimate offensive possession was the right pass, the right shot, the right O board effort, it just didn't finish. Props to FAU, now they can go back to Crackerville and eat grubs an deep-fried possum.

Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
Ah what could have been…..Boswell should not have dribbled into the defender at the end of regulation. He had space to take a jump or tear drop shot.
The last play…Boswell needed to be confident enough to put the ball on the floor and get to the rack and see if he hits the shot or if someone puts it back in

Taking 4 seconds off the clock just to get to half court with 6 seconds left didn't help. Should have just let it play out at that point.

Do we realistically need to go undefeated in the Pac to “earn” the respect necessary for a 1 seed?

Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
Unless they are ranked 1 or 2, which may be doubtful pending this late December collapse losing 2 out of 3, and a weak PAC schedule, it may not be a real upset if they lose to a similarly ranked team.
Elite 8 is definitely the ceiling if they played the tourney today.
Miller would have ran out of time outs.
Didn't catch the game due to having my kids and grandkids all here*, but I would have bet the house Lute would not have called time out. Like he has said, it's up to the players to win, or lose, the game on what he has taught them. The obvious thing about time outs is, that you call one to setup a play, that gives the opposing team a free timeout to setup a defense.
*- They are bad fans. I will have them apologize to Machina later.

Losing to a Final 4 team means we have an Elite 8 ceiling? Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
UA might see Purdue or FAU on the way to Elite 8 again, along with 66 other possible good teams.
UA's last time better than the Elite 8 was barely in this century and many of those born that year are now graduating from the UA.
This is the best team the UA has had since then? FAU really peaked last season after losing earlier to Bryant and Manhattan.
And obviously the UA 97 NC team peaked after playing some shitty ball. Maybe they are just in a lull getting ready to peak in spring.
Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
We could of won by 10 or lost as we did. Losing in double ot to a good team is nothing to be ashamed of. We still have a legit good chance of making the ff

Guys, Boswell had 5 steals for the second game in a row. That strikes me as a stat with historic significance.
On the game itself, it’s a tough loss to a very good team. There’s a lot to like about our performance today, but we absolutely have to tighten up our passing in order to go deep in the tourney.

Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
The KJ push off 4 pt swing in regulation and the jump stop pivot foot weirdness out to an FAU three in OT were the two consequential plays of the game. Big swings in high leverage that both were questionable and both went their way. Rather intervening officials IMO. It happens.

100%. Here's what Lloyd said after the Purdue game:
“I’m not trying to be the No. 1-ranked team in December. (The media) decides that, not me,” Wildcats coach Tommy Lloyd said. “It was two great teams going at it and thought it was a great atmosphere. It was basically a road game for the most part. I think our guys dug in and fought back. I think this is going a long way to really help our program.”
https://www.thescore.com/ncaab/news/2795815
And after the FAU game Lloyd said:
Lloyd was impressed with the Owls from the beginning, middle and after.
“We knew it was gong to be tough,” he said. “When we went up, I was like, the chances of us continuing this is probably pretty slim. To their credit they dug back in the game.”
https://allsportstucson.com/2023/12/23/ ... d-we-will/
And this:
So, we just got to hunker down and bounce back from this — and we will. Our guys are hoopers. They like to play so I’m not worried about that.”
fwiw
As I see it, Coach L is looking past Dec. to March/ April. He created this team
along with the game schedule to prepare the Wildcats to be tougher when the
dancing starts in March. Sure it's a tough loss, double OT and all. But it's not
like the Cats quit...sometimes the shots don't fall. Today was one of those days.
38% vs. 50% shooting is a big margin to overcome. Credit to FAU and Johnell Davis who dropped 35 points in 39 mins. He willed the Owls to a win. On the
other hand, the Cats were in it till the last shot. If Caleb hits that 3, this is
a different conversation. Tip of the hat to FAU..they'll make some noise in March. From what I see, so will the Cats. UOA is tougher having played these last 3 games. There are some dogs on this roster. We'll need them.
side note: I see you Oumar - 21 rebounds.

FAU’s will to win was amazing but I was happy to see us match that.
FAU should have been in the championship game last year and returned every starter. These guys have been in some very tough games.
I was very encouraged about yesterday as FAU had to hit some very difficult shots to beat us.

It really was a great game but you may destroy a few remotes.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?
Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
I was really disappointed in the final sequence - Both Boswell and Love settled for difficult perimeter, one-on-one play. Down by one, no need to prefer a too-long three-pointer. I would have much preferred attacking the basket with enough time for a tip follow-up or get to the line - also more consistent with our offense...
I thought Purdue beat us - both teams played well, they just played better (and maybe the best they could possibly play)...
I think we lost to FAU - they took us out of our offense, and we played much of the game without "poise" (CTL's term)...
But, of course, its a long season, but ,mostly with opponents that we can play down to, and none that really should challenge us to play better...

People who watched the game bagging on Boswell and Larsson, but looking at the box score, how did Ballo get 9 offensive boards yet only 4 baskets? It's not like he only get garbage put back points, he gets plays called for him.
Biggest guy on the court for most the game. The big Russian only played 23 minutes.

Re: (M) Game #11 Florida Atlantic vs. Arizona (2023-2024)
Casey Jacobsen made a comment during the game about there any many college basketball players that don’t want to take the big shots. Ballo played like that. Especially late in regular time or one of the OTs we finally run the offense and he catches 2 feet in the paint, 5 feet from the basket. He froze and didn’t go up with it. Instead he kicked it out.Merkin wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 10:17 am People who watched the game bagging on Boswell and Larsson, but looking at the box score, how did Ballo get 9 offensive boards yet only 4 baskets? I’ve thought that Ballo needs to get the ball more late in games. His FT shooting may be shaky, but he gets high % looks, and he creates offensive rebounding opportunities. And we have an OUTSTANDING rebounding team this year.Merkin wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 10:17 am People who watched the game bagging on Boswell and Larsson, but looking at the box score, how did Ballo get 9 offensive boards yet only 4 baskets? Hero ball is always high risk, high reward. This is not a knock on Love. He’s a phenomenal player, and we need him taking shots. I’m just a little uneasy about putting all our eggs in the 30 ft 3 attempt basket in the final minute of the game.

The one that is really resonating is that blown dunk attempt by Love in the 2nd half. If he’s just laid that ball in, it’s an easy 2 points. And we lost by 1.EastCoastCat wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 11:32 am We missed a ton of chippies too. I thought that played a big part as well.
