The Washington Fighting Whities

Post by Chicat »

If anyone wants any unofficial official Washington Redskins gear, I'll be making it in my basement this weekend. And now there's nothing Dan Snyder can do to stop me...
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

So, basically they have no control over distribution and licensing, which provides monetary incentive to change name to moniker they can control, best earn funds on.

It's the name, not the logo. Although the logo's got to go too.

So I just checked the copyright office, and the "Fighting Whities" is trademarked by a guy "HSP"...

So what's now interesting is that all kinds of names/logos could be deemed "offensive" and be up for losing their copyright protection. A lot of people in Advertising/Marketing/Branding circles are not happy this morning. Can you imagine if Dove had to change their name and logo because it's deemed possibly offensive to Christians? Or the Red Cross? Or Jewie Jew's Kosher Hot Dogs?

Do NFL teams make money on licensing and distribution and selling of team gear or does it all go into a pot of all the teams in the league and then distributed evenly among the teams?

Saw a bit about this on OTL (ESPN), the ruling is stayed while its being appealed and it could be appealed to about 4 different levels of courts. It took 8 years to get this decision! Even if the WFW's federal trademark protection is lost, they still might be protected by each state's common law.

I like this action. A previous action was lost on the technicality of laches which is essentially sitting on your rights. The new plaintiffs were 18 years old or so so laches can't be a defense this time (new adults who had no previous right to bring suit).

I can't understand why the WFW don't change their name. This shouldn't be a close issue.

I can't wait for the name change. The name is totally insensitive to Native Americans.

In fact, as soon as they change their name, I'm totally gonna go scalp some tickets for them.

What's wrong with the logo exactly? Have you seen Florida State's new logo? I think the Skins logo is more than fine and respectable, while obviously their name sure isn't. The Cleveland Indians nickname and logo are both equally as offensive IMO.

It's this generic and incorrect representation of all Native Americans that goes hand-in-hand with the name. Florida State at least represents a Seminole. The Indians logo is worlds better than their old drunken Indian one. I just never understood why he doesn't have a dot on his forehead.

Has anyone seen an article that contain or heard of any LEGITIMATE alternative names for the Redskins. I do like their color scheme so I would imagine that it would stay intact.

None of those denote racial affiliation through use of denigrating descriptive.

Most are innocuous, still others are playful region or relationship specific.

No reason a team can't be Warriors.

But Redskins literally has two inferences, that of a referent to race by skin color, and two, a derogatory term used as referent to the scalped heads of natives.

How is that an appropriate name, let alone for a team housed in the nation's capital, a capital that has a checkered history dealing with race and, specifically, the ancestors of the few remaining referents?

Best reason to change it is that the original owner was racist. Last NFL team to integrate. Thought of the team as representing the entire South.

Fight song, written by his daughter, included: "Scalp 'um, swamp 'um we will take 'um big score." My high school, the Warriors, used to sing the same thing. So insensitive.

Sportswriter Shirley Povich once wrote: “Jim Brown, born ineligible to play for the Redskins, integrated their end zone three times yesterday.”

That's a tradition you want to honor by keeping "Redskins"?

That's a great line by Povich. I have no clue why the Redskins' owner is making this a big issue. What I want to tell him when he defends the name is . .

Never understand why people would constantly choose to be on the wrong side of history of so many social issues. Equal rights, Gay Marriage.... this.

The name will change one day and the following generation will ask "How come they didn't change it so long ago?"

Outside of a car or casino, I sense you've never been on a Rez, where just whiteness without the slur is often times met with rage. I've been physically threatened, accosted for mere presence, helping. Imagine if I tributed them with the slur?

I'm sure they just would have high-fived me.

I'm concerned by the continued use of the Redskins name because it sends the message that skin color and associated stereotypical attributes basically undermines people's ability to self-identify and actively present themselves. It's not up to the whites who don't suffer the effects of this practice to say it isn't important or it's silly or whatever. The damage it does is for real. The stuff we've inflicted on native peoples is bad enough without putting them through this.
