Houston At Arizona Discussion Thread

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

Houston is 4-5, 3-3 in the Big XII, and coming off consecutive home wins over Utah and Kansas St. They started their season 0-2, with losses to UNLV and at Oklahoma, then closed-out non-conference play with a win over crosstown Rice. Houston promptly dropped their first two league games, at Cincinnati, and at Iowa St. Since then, 3-1 with a win at TCU, a loss (at Arrowhead Stadium in KC) to Kansas, and their two most recent wins. They have a big running QB in Zeon Chriss, and they spread the wealth with various WRs and RBs. They have the same bye week that we have, so no advantage there. We'll see what, if any, band-aids Brennan and staff have come up with over the two week break. The oddsmakers I've looked at give Arizona a slight edge with home field advantage, but it looks to me like a fairly tough opponent that's improving over the course of its season.

Quick question…

Do we have to?

Their record shows what an effective coach can bring to a program. Picked dead last you can see how they have improved since the season started.

This is it in a nutshell. When the program loses its most ardent fans, you know it’s over for the most part.

Well, there's the players on the team.

And the trainers and rest of the football support staff

And the AD Department staff that support the football program

And all the rest who are part of planning, operating and cleaning up after football-related events.

But, I get it. THEY OWE YOU, and THEY'VE LET YOU DOWN! So you're not merely disappointed (as they are), but you're ANGRY!!!

In fact, NO ONE in the University of Arizona Athletic Department, or any of it's athletic teams owes you a fucking thing!! Dig yourself!!

That's all true, but at the same time we also don't owe the University of Arizona Athletic Department anything as well, let alone our support.

It's a two way street.

Here's the thing. Robbins was bad and he let Heeke make a bad hire and then fire Heeke, while maintaining the hire. Now that's no fault of DRF or our new president, but nonetheless fans don't owe U of A anything for utter incompetence. Meanwhile, DRF and the new president could win our support back. It just may take a lot of money to do so.

Only U of A fans "owe" support to U of A athletic teams.

No one is required to be a U of A fan.

As far as the Robbins/Heeke bs, I'll only say this - the U of A had to make as fast of a hire as possible to stem the flow of players to UDub. The previously vetted Brennan was just about the ONLY viable candidate in that short time frame. And, that hiring was instrumental in keeping Noah Fifita and Tetairoa McMillan, who then requested that some of their NIL money be routed to players that weren't getting paid as much in order to make sure guys were all happy and feeling valued.

U of A didn't have to make the fastest hire possible, it merely chose to do so. Would we have likely lost more players to the portal? Sure, but what's more important, keeping those players at all costs or going through a full on coaching search and landing the best possible coach to build the best possible program? In retrospect it sure as shit is beyond clear which route Arizona should have taken and it wasn't the "make the quickest hire possible" route.

Arizona had more money than it ever was going to to land the best coach possible with the buyout money it received from UW for Jedd plus what the boosters already raised. It chose to go quick to keep the gang together instead though. It was an emotional decision and it's hard to blame them for going that route, but yeah....it was the wrong approach. We prioritized the current players when we hired Sumlin and we know what a disaster that was.

I feel like we're in the ASU donated cans for a free ticket territory.

Plus, Thanksgiving is coming up in less than two weeks.
