Had my first post 60 physical. I'm now on Tamsulosin for my prostate, Lisinopril for hypertension, and Atorvastatin for high triglycerides. Also got a blood pressure machine for dailey testing.

A little update. When I first tested my bp was 181/84. Today it is 104/62.
I believe I started to have a reaction to the statin. My face started feeling like it had a massive razor burn going on and I was feeling like I just couldn't get comfortable no matter what. I stopped taking it and am seeing the doctor tomorrow.

Why wife had the same issue with a statin. Her doctor switched her to another and she was fine.

Your blood pressure sure was high, extremely so. Nice recovery on that.

Was the first BP in the Doc's office? Was the second at home? The Doc office BP syndrome is real, at the very least because they don't follow proper protocol .... they really don't have time.

My wife said she had heart palpitations when she tried statins. I think she was being, how do I say, full of shit. But I didn't want to end up dumped in a shallow desert grave, so I kept my mouth shut. If her next bloodwork shows still elevated cholesterol Ima press her to try again and maybe go the route Mrs. Merkin went.

One month on 10 milligrams a day of lipitor and my cholesterol was 150.

My biggest typo error is typing teh instead of the. I use spell check and one day I fucked up and added it to the dictionary instead of correcting it. Is there a way to remove teh from my library?

JMark talking about The Freshman in the Old Movies thread reminded me that for my birthday in 1995 my mom got me 2nd row tickets to see the opening night of the Broadway revival of On The Waterfront which starred Penelope Ann Miller.

James Gandolfini and David Morse were also in it, as was Ron Eldard and Kevin Conway (google them and you’ll see they’re “oh yeah that guy”s from films).

The guy who played Father Martin collapsed on stage mid-way through the second act and they had to stop the show. Ron Eldard immediately yelled out for a doctor and one rushed onstage from the crowd. The curtain closed and then there was a commotion behind us. Apparently Madonna was in the crowd and got rushed out when the lights came on. They never ended up finishing it and we all had to leave. The play closed a week later. Guess it wasn’t the blockbuster they were hoping it would be.

Here's a rando piece of Boomer snobbery: Watching The Amazing Race makes evident the inability of many younger folks to self-drive. It's simply an absolutely terrifying proposition for them to reckon paper maps. Without a digital voice guide, many folks under 40 are fucked, especially in a foreign country. Of course, even for a dinosaur like me, who has lived and died by map reading, it's always easy to hide navigation fuckups behind "shitty maps", but the fact remains the simple act of processing paper map icons seems lost on many, many people.

From the time I was 10 years old, I was “The Navigator”.

Long road trips in the front passenger seat letting my dad know how many miles there were between exits according to the road atlas legend and the markings on fold out gas station AAA maps.

As a child of the 80s, I was baptized in the analog world. I’ll not only get us from Tucumcari to Taos on one fill up, but you’ll see some shit along the way even the Conquistadors missed.

Every summer as a kid we would do a 3-4 week road trip. Twice went from Tucson-LA-Bay Area-Portland-Seattle-Vancouver-Edmonton. I was always the navigator from 6 or 7 years old on. Obsessed over ever large format Rand McNally atlas when they came out each year. Loved the population figures of almost every named place, city, county, state. 10 year old me could recite the 1986 population of the 25 biggest cities in North America. Is it any wonder my Masters Degree is in Cultural Geography and Regional Development. Ha! Still geek out over maps. Still probably spend a couple hours daily randomly following watercourses or roads on Google Maps and having to research the weird shit one sometimes comes upon. #MapNerd

For my job every once in a while I’ll need to virtually ride a roadway so I use Google Maps and Streetview and then I’ll get sucked into the map and spend 20-30 minutes seeing what backroads will take you from Del Rio to Amarillo and all the shit towns you would go through along the way. Love maps. And I miss atlases.

A set of good maps is a wonder. It's a portal into a trance-inducing perception change that bends time and, strangely, makes the world go away by re-presenting it through the map-sense shift. I fell in love with Gazetteers in the last few years of work when FIA required the use of contour maps, digital ortho-photos, and a lot of driving across rural New Mexico through every land ownership jurisdiction you could imagine. My wife got sorta jealous. Turned her into a map widow. Somewhere I stashed Forest Service project area maps from 20 years ago. They still smell of sweat and conifer terpenes.

In order to get the good high I really need terrain and elevation data beyond the visual corridor of Google maps streetview. But if you're searching for landmarks within the streetview visual corridor it can be damn cool ..... an old girlfriend's apartment building on Armacost in Santa Monica. Ooops, did I say that?

What I hate these days when we're walking a new city using whatever piece of shit rendering is constructed by the municipality beside its paths, rivers, neighborhoods or greenbelt developments, and the planners can't even orient an unscaled map to North, so you're trying to crawl inside their twisted perspective. I get all pissy and pedantic.

It bugs the shit out of me that my in-car nav map orients to which direction I’m traveling. So no matter what it looks like I’m heading north (which the programmers probably think is comforting to people because it shows the car moving the direction they are currently facing). Then I have to change it to showing me going in the actual compass direction I’m heading.

Why show me on the map going “forward”? I want to know which way I’m traveling ON THE PLANET. I’m not a toddler.

I collected maps as a kid (ages 5-8). Back then - yes, I am dating myself -- you could get them free from gas stations, at least the local cities and states. I even wrote to the big stations - Exxon, Texaco -- to ask them to send me maps. They did. I would stare at the maps for hours. I would memorize the streets in my town in order. I would plot how to get somewhere across the country and imagine the trip. For my birthday, I wanted atlases - either world or road.

It's weird because literally no one encouraged me about it, and I didn't know anyone else that liked maps either. Just a weird kid I guess. It continued until baseball cards took over when I was 9.

I still prefer paper maps to electronic depictions and put an atlas in my RV because it's easier for planning.

I used to have a large library of BLM and forest service topos for many areas of the SW. A live-in girlfriend years ago convinced me to throw them out because we needed closet space. She's gone (good) and so are the maps (bad).

Seriously my favorite thing as a kid. I loved heading to AAA with my parents to load up on guide books and maps to prepare for the trip. By age 9 I would be less navigator often and it was a blast.
