Senior New Mexico guard Hugh Greenwood went off Wednesday night.
Went off statistically, scoring a game-high 22 points, in addition to eight rebounds, in New Mexico's needed and theatrical 71-69 win at UNLV.
Went off emotionally, and rightfully so, in the postgame on-camera interview. Greenwood was asked on CBS Sports Network what it was that alllowed him to have such a huge game and propel his team to victory.
Greenwood's reponse wasn't 15 seconds of canned clichés and then a jog back to the locker room. It was pointed and intentional. Greenwood said he was entirely motivated by a Twitter cyberbully, an anonymous misfit who was was tweeting insensitive things at him in the build-up to the game, making "jokes" about Greenwood's mother.
Who happens to be battling cancer.
Greenwood's started a foundation in his mother's honor and ongoing spirit. Earlier this season, New Mexico coach Craig Neal famously had his hair cut during the Lobos' midnight madness, donating his hair to the cause and opting to buzz his head for Greenwood and his mother.
"Actually, it was a man on Twitter. I'm not going to shout him out; he doesn't deserve to," Greenwood said after the game/in the video above. "Talking about my mom battling secondary breast cancer, he was making cancer jokes all afternoon, talking about bringing my mom to the game in a hearse. There's a line, and it gets crossed, and I was mad about it tonight. Got my first dunk since my freshman year, and I credit it to him tonight because that's what motivated me."
As the interview ends, there's a quick and courteous thank you from Greenwood to the sideline reporter, but his face and tone are still clearly angry as he thinks about the tweets and the phony tough guy who sent them.
Those tweets, probably deleted by now (if the account holder hasn't nuked his handle altogether), won't be shared. We wouldn't highlight or bring attention to Twitter trolls as is.
This is newsworthy because Greenwood turned the act of online bullying and threats into motivation and made a public statement -- both with his play and in this postgame interview. The response to Greenwood's words was positive, immediate and overwhelming. Soon thereafter, he shared some of his own thoughts on Twitter. Positive ones.
