Officiating

Re: Officiating
It truly is amazing how great our defense is, in games and statistically on paper, taking into account pac-12 officiating. Most, if not all of the other great defenses do not have to worry about constant ticky tack fouls and having 2-3 starters in foul trouble in the first half or late in games on a consistent basis. Our guys aren't allowed to be as physical as the teams in some of the other conferences.
Re: Officiating
They were part of a 46-foul fiasco that required 2½ hours and was marred by lengthy reviews at TV monitors. It made the league look bad.
How bad is a 46-foul game? At the 2005 Elite Eight, in which Illinois beat Arizona 90-89 in overtime, there were 28 fouls. At the 2011 Elite Eight, in which UConn beat Arizona 65-63, there were 27 fouls.
Those games were called by elite-level officials.
How bad is a 28 foul game when 15 uncalled fouls happen inside the last 10 minutes?

This team is good enough to compete with the refs.

Jesus Christ. What a reply.

Re: Officiating
Let me state a couple of things. No matter how long Dave Hall has officiated, or if he is a "veteran" or not, he's awful. He makes anticipatory calls and is actually the "motherfucker" in the Miller GIF.
The Utah game had some fouls, but is far from being the worst examples of officiating that I've seen. The Stanford game this year was the worst of this year. No need to remind fans of the horrendous calls over the years, but this has been a problem in the PAC forever.
Truth be told, there are fans whining and insisting that refs in their conferences are the worst ever. That happens. It is a hard job, and I get it. I watched the Oregon/OSU game last night and it was remarkable how little you noticed the refs. That is really the key to all of this....how little can they be noticed. Nobody pays to watch a ref do his/her job.
Honestly nothing will change, bad calls will happen, and fans will become outraged. But the point of the matter is that teams need to learn how to be better than the refs...and that happened both in Utah and in Maples, the game I referenced.

Re: Officiating
Arizona has the depth and the toughness to be better than the officials, but do you watch any other conference's play and see so many calls in any individual game draw attention to them so much?
There's just no general consistency. Not even a tendency, unless you think calling flops is a tendency. Contact and traveling standards are all over the place. It's awful.
And for Larry Scott to continue to publicly maintain, "We are pleased with the high caliber of officiating in the conference" makes Tom Hansen look in-touch and hands-on by comparison.
Could we petition a Congressional subcommittee to subpoena this guy? Holy God.

Re: Officiating
Even when we aren't getting screwed, Pac reffing is terrible. Plenty of games I've watched have bipolar shifts from "no blood, no foul" to whistles every time down the floor. Even games where I have zero rooting interest are dotted with utter incompetence.
UCLA/Arizona and Utah/Arizona were back to back ****shows by Pac refs in prime time national games.

Re: Officiating
Those 180's happen on a weekly basis. The reffing is all over the place, not only game to game, crew to crew, but half to half and minute to minute. The overall product is something Scott should be ashamed of.Katzenfreund wrote:During last week's Wazzu game at USC on Pac-12 Networks, MacLean and his co-announcer repeatedly ripped the officials. After calling eleven fouls in the whole first half, the zebras did an inexplicable 180° and called ten fouls in the first four minutes of the second half. Both announcers stated that, while the character of the game hadn't changed a bit, the refs had lost any consistency to the detriment of the product on the court.
You know the roof is definitely on fire when the conference network demands improvement in officiating.
Reffing is hard, but even just recognition of the issue and a stated plan to deal with it would go a long way. Doing nothing but pretend it's ok is silly.

That flagrant on Ashley was insane.
Re: Officiating
Yea that was terrible. Think they went to video 3 times in the first 5-8 minutes of game action. From my seats, it looks like they got their crap together the rest of the game.pokinmik wrote:That flagrant on Ashley was insane.

I'd love to read the mind of PJC during that review....you know, his "basketball play" concussion.
Consistency. There is none of it.

And the kid "flopped" back and it was so clear on the playbacks. What were the refs thinking and seeing there. So crazy.pokinmik wrote:That flagrant on Ashley was insane.
Re: Officiating
I have always hated that official review of a player hitting another player with his elbow. What the hell is Ashley supposed to do? He had position and turned around for a shot. Inadvertent elbows happen in basketball. If it was an obvious intentional shot, I would understand.pokinmik wrote:That flagrant on Ashley was insane.

National game on CBS with top 5 Arizona?
Yeah, let's be the pac12 as usual and call bullshit, late bullshit, and technical bullshit all game long.

Bullshit terrible calls against both teams all game. No rhyme or reason to any call.

FUCKING HORSESHIT DOUBLE TECH call on BAsh.
"Hey, in the pac 12, you can shove a AZ player in the back as he gets up off the floor. Don't worry about it, we'll just call a double tech on each of you"

Kravish also gave him an elbow in the back when he was on the ground, then pretended to help him up just to push him.
All with the ref looking right at him. No call until BAsh responded.

Anyone have video of the push?
Re: Officiating
Kravish didn't try to help him get up, he tried to pull his arm out as Ashley was using it to push himself off the floor. Who does that? Terrible, terrible call by the refs from the perspective of punishing the instigator, but I understand why they took that route: Ashley's reaction was a little over the top and they couldn't realistically let him get away with it.Merkin wrote:Kravish also gave him an elbow in the back when he was on the ground, then pretended to help him up just to push him.

Otherwise the reffing wasn't so bad last night.

Re: Officiating
Well it's UCLA in the Pac 12 Tournament yet again. Is Sean Miller's anus prepared?
Re: Officiating
Officiating wasn't too bad last night even though Kravish should have been kicked out of the game.
But with UCLA on the bubble and needing this win tonight, I am sure the Dave Hall goon squad will be deployed in Vegas tonight.
UCLA +11 should be pretty safe.

I don't know. We basically slept through 15 minutes last time and still won by ten despite customary Pac reffing.azcat34 wrote:Officiating wasn't too bad last night even though Kravish should have been kicked out of the game.

The defensive foul on Tarc, followed by Tarc shooting and getting hammered, then Tarc immediately getting another foul on defense makes me want to agree with you.
Walton agrees too.

Wow, the reffing at the end of Oregon/Utah has been pretty one sided. That last foul letting Wright tie it up, geez.
