This year's tournament will be the last (the 40th edition). From the early 80s until about 10-12 years ago it was a top level tournament along with the NIT and Maui, but it hasn't attracted any big programs the last decade or so. Last 6 years the champions have been Middle Tennessee, Iona, Colorado State, Harvard, Charlotte, Murray State..
But it is now over.

In recent years, as early season tournaments multiplied, top teams chose warmer venues.
I doubt that has anything to do with it. Who would not want to go to Alaska? Travel expenses excepted of course.
The event brought the highest level of basketball competition to Alaska, with appearances in the men's bracket by Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA and other perennial national contenders.
Like Arizona? SAY THE NAME!
