2018-19 Phoenix Suns

Post by UAEebs86 »

Deandre drafted at #1 overall.

Who are they taking at #16? Trading up?

I'm thinking maybe Aaron Holiday or DiVincenzo.

I loved it.

Booker
Bridges
Jackson
Ayton

Add in a PG who can provide some creation, can defend a bit, can shoot (sounds like Okobo's projection) and thats a very modern starting 5.

Okobo is a spacing god, apparently. Super quick motion/release and good off catch or dribble, meaning in PnR, you have to fight through or switch, which means Ayton will have a smaller defender on him.

Off spot up, he is apparently almost elite.

Wingspan should allow him to become a solid gambling defender, but I trust Igor to get him to buy in a bit more.

But he’s a PnR scorer who attacks off switches, or shoots with just a sliver of light.

Interesting pick.

I think I like him as a backup who can scorer for next few years, but his upside projects as a starting PG.

And Bridges with Jackson defensively is brilliant, and he’s an even better fit for Igor offensively. Plus passer, great shooter, solid build for lane attacks, but should be able to develop some off-ball motion schemes ala Klay and get some side to side, screened open shots.

Loved the suns draft. You can never have too many long athletic wings. Bridges has a 7’ wingspan! Just watched Okobo highlights and he can def shoot the 3 w a quick release. Then add in Ayton as a pure monster down low w his array of moves and dunking power. Aytons mobility is excellent picking up smaller defenders as well. Suns just got way more athletic and better on defense hopefully very soon.

Now we see what kind of trades and or free agent moves they can pull off. Suns can easily jump towards the playoffs and be a most improved type of team, Ayton is that special.

Positionless basketball, he's Phoenix's face up 4 next year along with Bender, plus his experience will be valuable for the young guns.

Igor May have history with Jones because Igor was on D’Antoni’s SSOL Suns staff when Jones was a player.

Igor is brilliant offensively and really good with big men defensively, so, I doubt that was an issue.

Plus Igor was cheap, which Sarver likes.

Yeah this is about the glaring hole at point guard not being addressed with the regular season breathing down our necks as well as Sarver wanting to start winning again and he loves Jones. As JMark will attest to, Suns fans pretty much see this for what it is and that's Sarver can very likely control Jones so he'll be the default GM with Jones being the puppet. As Suns fans we can't wait for the next Hakim Warrick and Josh Childress signings.

The Suns are a huge mess. Bridges ignores Igor during the game and Ayton and Booker have words after. Right now it's looking like the Suns should of taken Doncic. Ayton is playing lazy basketball and it has gotten so bad, he did not start last night.

The backtracking isn’t convincing, and doesn’t really backtrack. I called it years ago: Sarver is going to destroy the product, and when when the community stops supporting his crappy franchise, he’ll move it to a more desperate place that doesn’t hate him. If you’re Phoenix, let him go. It’s your only chance to get a real franchise back, even if it takes decades.

As a huge Suns fan including season ticket holder (well partial plan), a Phoenix Resident and tax payer and critic of the media after the bullshit from MSPN I have been following this story very closely and done a ton of research on it.

Let me preface this by saying I am not a fan of how Sarver has ran the team or his basketball decisions since 2010 and even before that there were bad decisions. So dont mistake this as a defense for Sarver, this is just the facts. Like me with Larry Scott. He sucks and needs to go but I only blame him for the things he should be blamed for.

Anyway here are the facts on the Suns-Sarver-Talking Stick Resort Arena-City of Phoenix issue. But before I get into the story of the last few weeks you must understand these two facts that are not being reported much if at all.

Talking Stick Resort Arena is owned by the City of Phoenix. The Suns are their main tenant and run the arena for the City. Suns book all events and take a small cut as a fee for doing so of the proceeds of these events like concerts and Disney on Ice. But the City gets the majority of it as the owner. Suns also pay for all operating costs of the arena like the security, electric bill, etc. So the Suns pay millions to the City each year and operate the arena for the City. Glendale pays over $5 Million a year to a company to run Gila River Arena so this is another cost Sarver helps the City with.

The funds for this project are coming from the Sports Facility Fund which was put in place in the early 90s to pay for the construction of Talking Stick Resort Arena and renovations for it down the line. This comes from a tax on rental cars and hotel rooms. So this is a tourist tax. Yes still tax payers but the media is mislead when they say the City of Phoenix Residents are paying for this. They are not except when they do staycations or rent cars. Also the City of Phoenix fucked up the Downtown Sheraton hotel so bad by buying it then selling it for a loss that the City needs to dip into the Sports Facility Fund to pay for that fuckup.

So now the story of the last few weeks.

A deal was struck two weeks ago where the City of Phoenix will pay for the structural and foundation needs of about $150M and the Suns will pay the rest which is cosmetics. Suns will benefit for the cosmetics yes but the City will every day as well minus the 60 days the Suns and Mercury have games. Anyway the Suns pay $80M for cosmetics. Suns will also spend $50M for a new practice facility. Currently the practice facility is in the basement and is part of the lease agreement for rent. Rent will not go down with the practice facility moving. Also for every dollar over budget Suns pay it. And the Suns will pay if the City cannot and be reimbursed by lowered rent payments down the line. So the Suns have way more on the line and risk than the City.

Also note that the Suns paid $149M to date on existing renovations many of which are structural like electrical and plumbing. City has paid $80M. So this deal puts it at 50/50 even though Sarver and the Suns arent obligated to pay a dime.

Kate Gallego is the front runner to be voted the next Phoenix Mayor in March. She sucks really bad on this issue. She is completely inept, misinformed and a total coward. She is a hard no even though the facts say she should be. So the City Council and Suns agreed two weeks ago and pushed the vote up to last week because of fear Gallego will fuck it up. Now this next part is not confirmed but I have supreme confidence that it is true. A misleading poll was conducted that said nearly 70% of people dont approve of tax payers paying for the renovation of Talking Stick Resort Arena. The Poll was so misleading because they only called people with land lines, did not say that the Suns and City split the costs, that there was an agreed upon plan, that tourist pay for it or that TSRA is owned by the City. The person who commissioned the poll wont say who asked him to do it. I would bet a month's salary it was Gallego. Look at this interview and how much of an dishonest idiot he was.
Anyway the media picks this up and again doesnt give the facts, just say that most people dont want this plan because of this poll. This is a huge story here (completely misleading by the way) and on the day of the vote it appears the votes to get this done are not there anymore so the vote is pushed back a month with the chance for 5 public meetings on the subject. As soon as the delay in the vote is annouced Laurie Roberts reports that Sarver threatened to move the team to Las vegas or Seattle. Her source was someone involved with the City Council (keep in mind Kate Gallego was a councilman until she decided to run for mayor). So this gets the City even more against Sarver. Except for Robert Sarver never did threaten. This was a lie and the source that Roberts used clarified the next day (or maybe two days after) that the threat never took place.

So now Sarver is vilified for lies and misleading information. And no one is talking about the arena being owned by the City, the funding source, that Sarver had put up over $100M of his money when he had no obligation to, that he donates tons of money every year to local charities and that Kate Gallego and the other no votes on the council have no plan of what to do with TSRA if the Suns leave TSRA.

Now why Gallego is a coward. She wont do interviews unless she knows the questions beforehand and wont talk about her plan if the Suns leave downtown Phoenix. She also wont answer if she paid Barrett Marson to do that poll. So she is just talking trash with no plan. She also has no idea of the agreement the City and Suns have in place and she was on Mac and Gaydos on 92.3 and honestly seemed to have no idea that the City owns TSRA. The interviews she has given she does not talk about the facts of the term sheet of the agreement between the Suns and City. Sorry but if you are going to be the mayor of my city you got to have a plan and know what the fuck you are talking about. Fuck Gallego.

But yeah Sarver sucks as the owner in terms of basketball product but he is doing so much more than he needs to on this deal that helps the City. Will Phoenix and especially downtown survive if the Suns move to a reservation, yes they will but it wont be nearly what it is now and the DT Phoenix isnt great now but it has huge momentum currently which will all be thrown away.
