Pearl Harbor Day

Post by TheCatInTheHat »

The Star has a nice grouping of photos of the USS Arizona, many from the UArizona library's special collections. Despite our woes in 2020, it's good to remember that we're still better off than on that grim day nearly 80 years ago that presaged America's full-scale entry into the massive Second World War. If you ever have the opportunity, I recommend a visit, not just to the Arizona Memorial, but to making a day of it at the various dockside museums there, the hangers on Ford Island, the historic USS Missouri, the USS Bowfin submarine, etc. There's also the sister to the bell salvaged from the USS Arizona that hangs in the UArizona clock tower overlooking the outline of the ship on the mall. Apparently the US Navy still considers that it has ownership rights (despite ordering it melted down after the war), and they've banned the ringing of it in order to preserve it. So it won't be rung today, or ever again.
