Crap Bowls 2024/5

Post by Merkin »

Didn't this happen last season too, one school just sent scrubs to a bowl game since the good players transferred or declared for the draft?

Needless to say that UA only has 40 scholarship players left and could not field a team.

Really need to change the portal dates.

Wow, that's fucked up. I'm not sure how much longer people are going to be interested in college sports at this rate. I'm losing interest by the day

Bowl games in general are pretty fucked now that the 12 team playoff is here. Luckily the Arizona Bowl has Snoop, but I'm not sure if even celebrity endorsements will be enough to get people interested in anything but the playoffs eventually.

Most of the non-CFP games are bad, but at least half of the bowls have been lousy for decades. So, those who like football will watch the better games, and the least interested will just watch the Super Bowl and the CFP title game. If they ever expand the CFP to, say, 24 teams, then everything else probably becomes the NIT.

From my quick review, the halfway decent non-CFP games look like:

Las Vegas: USC vs Texas A&M (marginal)
Orlando: 13.) Miami vs 18.) Iowa St
San Antonio: 17.) BYU vs 23.) Colorado
Nashville: 19.) Missouri vs Iowa
Tampa: 11.) Alabama vs Michigan
Orlando: 15.) South Carolina vs 20.) Illinois
Houston: LSU vs Baylor

Meanwhile WSU players voted on players transferring out and said they could still play in their bowl game if they wanted to before they transfer. I think it really just comes down to what school wants to do what.

You can’t do anything about the transfer timeline because of the STUDENT part of student-athlete.

Why fans and so-called pundits refuse to recognize this, I’m not sure. But if you don’t want players transferring before bowl games, stop making them attend the schools they play for I guess.

I've asked this before, but are academics even a thing anymore?

In this era where kids are transferring constantly, I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a story about any athlete at any school not being able to play because of their grades/coursework.

Long gone are the days when someone like Miles Simon had to sit out a whole semester on what turned out to be a championship team because of his grades.

I think there was a guy or two Brennan wanted to bring over from SJSU that couldn't come because of grades.

I’m not sure how the “crap bowls” will survive in this new model.

Might as well make them a NIT type playoff where the non-CFP teams play for something or opt out if they wish. Do they really generate that much money/interest moving forward for participating schools as ad hoc bowls?

I might be wrong as long as there are the weed eater & Idaho potato sponsorships of the world willing to support.

I truly have zero idea if any of these kids are going to class if they don’t want to, but the transfer/enrollment timelines are still based on the idea that they do have to be students.

So either they need to give up the facade and make the players employees (not students) or there should only be one time you can transfer and be eligible to play and that’s over the summer.

Most schools if not all require at least 2 years in residency before you can get a degree no matter how many units you have. So nearly impossible to get a degree if you transfer every year.

Most bowls are money losers for the universities. They are required to purchase so many tickets which they then need to sell. If they don't sell them all, the university eats the costs. Fortunately for Arizona and other members of the PAC, the PAC distributes bowl monies equally (after expenses) and also splits losses from bowl games. I think we all remember the crap bowls like the Gilden Bowl where the stands were empty. All worked out, since Oregon and USC went to the BCS bowls, and Arizona used their share of that money to make up for the money they lost.

Fortunately the B12 also shares bowl revenue.

So 6 units?

To be eligible for practice or competition, a student-athlete must be enrolled in at least a minimum of 12 undergraduate credits or 9 graduate credits
