Re: Coaching Searches
UCLA has a pretty depleted roster and while I won't say they won't lose anyone, everyone is pretty much in the two deep. If they aren't, you don't want them and what limited NIL money is probably going to the good players as is.
As for coaches, who knows. The floor seems like DC Tony White. It's not an ideal time to hire a coach. I'd prefer an offensive one. But whoever we hire has to have a desire to recruit. The lack of offers ucla gave out compared to any other program was staggering. Chip hated it and NIL made it worse for him.

I think he is a brilliant mind but he doesn't want to go get the guys he needs. OC might be the spot where he works best. 86th ranked class for UCLA is just lazy.Carcassdragger wrote: Fri Feb 09, 2024 3:31 pmThanks Bug. Good coach, all the best.
Re: Coaching Searches
I don't think anybody will disagree that Tedford’s legacy will be his highly productive 11 seasons as the Cal Bears coach from 2002-2012. With backfields that included the likes of Aaron Rodgers, JJ Arrington, Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, Kyle Boller, Jahvid Best, and Shane Vareen. Tedford’s tenure produced eight different 1,000-yard rushers; 9 of Tedford’s 11 seasons featured a RB amassing over 1,000 yards.
Tedford was 82-57 at Cal; his time coaching in Berkeley is the highpoint of Cal football during my time following the sport since the 90s. Unfortunately when it came to conference championships, their decade of success came at a time when USC’s dynasty under Pete Carroll dominated the PAC 10.

Holy shit I’m old. I remember when Tedford was the hot young coaching mind.

Re: Coaching Searches
He of course needs to take care of his health first but I hope Brennan has him on speed dial to see if he can come back as an analyst

Re: Coaching Searches
Odd story. Whole teams just switching schools? It really is a pro league now.
Re: Coaching Searches
Marshall didn’t extend their coach who went 9-3 this year so I kind of feel like you reap what you sow. Next time stick with a winner.

Re: Coaching Searches
Marshall has about 27 guys in the portal not the whole team.

So less than us
Re: Coaching Searches
It's worse, at least with pro leagues you have a semblance of structure. This is an all out shitshow with no rules, contracts, etc. Even worse this is the structure we have put into place for COLLEGE KIDS, you know, that period where a person is still growing and forming themselves. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic.Merkin wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 3:25 pm Odd story. Whole teams just switching schools? It really is a pro league now.
Re: Coaching Searches
I heard the agents are getting up to 20%. That sucks for these kids and it's putting them in a bad situation and encouraging bad adviceCopaCat wrote: Fri Dec 13, 2024 4:59 pmIt's worse, at least with pro leagues you have a semblance of structure. Re: Coaching Searches
If you’re signing a contract and handing over 20% you’re doing it wrong. These kids should be agent shopping. Just like anything else. Hear a pitch from a whole bunch of people and get shit in writing.84Cat wrote: Fri Dec 13, 2024 5:20 pmI heard the agents are getting up to 20%. Norfolk State makes way more sense than Sac State from a recruiting standpoint.

Taylor was 6-18 in two seasons at Stanford. Surely that didn't help. And I hope Stanford remains a bottom feeder.

Re: Coaching Searches
Never been a Stanford fan myself, for many reasons, but mostly due to even more colossal hypocrisy than most colleges surrounding athletics. More than likely somebody will search the internet for some dataset to refute it, but it seems to me that, pre-Harbaugh, Stanford football tended to coast along, putting out PR releases about academics, until donors got irritated with losing. Then, they'd shell out their unlimited bucks for a good football coach, and the admissions department would suddenly 'special admit' better players, and they'd have a big season or two before they'd go back to pontificating about their academics. It seemed to change during Harbaugh and Shaw's early tenure, as some influential types apparently liked winning. Now, they've been flat for six years. It'll be interesting to see if it's again time to placate their VIPs, or if they've decided with conference re-orgs and the playoff structure, that it's not the same as going all-out for the Rose Bowl, and they'll just periodically recycle the usual suspects, like some MLB teams.

Re: Coaching Searches
Must have missed when Luck was named GM there. That's going to be a tough job with both Bay Area schools focusing more on academics.
Many schools allow the AD to do their own admissions, as long as they meet the minimum requirements.
But you still need to go to class and pass classes competing with some of the best students in the world. Doubt Stanford has the skate classes like the UA had/has for athletes.
Whenever I went to a class at the UA and saw a lot of athletes and Greeks in it i thought SWEET!

Re: Coaching Searches
I am missing something? When did a college get a GM who makes hiring decisions for the athletic department? Do they not have an athletic director

Thanks Merk. I assume the AD handles all other sports. Seems like a cutting edge way to maximize your program in this new age of professional college football

Exactly my first reaction. Isn't it the AD's job to hire & fire? Didn't even know college football had GMs until last year finding out Alabama had a "roster GM" making over $1M.azcat49 wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 2:57 pm I am missing something?
