and, ECC - 12 of the top 13 play tomorrow

it will all pretty much be settled tomorrow while teams slug it out and AZ gets the Buffs.

i know im a broken record, but things have and continue to break just perfectly for Lloyd this first season.

im done saying its not possible with him until he proves it to me that him failing is possible.

actually on the off chance it happens, and i dont think it will, but another tendency ive pointed out is Gonzaga's propensity to lose or drop a late season game to a worthy opponent after multi-month long and easy win streak piles up against poor conf competition. late season losses to BYU a few times and another team that i am forgetting but it has happened.

if they lose to a capable St Mary's team tonight and AZ holds serve in Boulder, the Cats would have the inside track on the number one overall seed still needing, imo, to win out in the reg season thus making the conf tournament inconsequential, which it pretty much already is as of today anyway.

long shot i know but dont totally discount it. but, if Gonzaga wins tonight (as expected) then the rest of the way doesnt matter, they are number one seed overall regardless, imo.

small sliver of hope i know but fun nonetheless.

This is an interesting (and not entirely far-fetched) scenario, 97. Let's see what happens with Gonzaga today.

Another thought: if Gonzaga does lose, and win out, is there any chance Tommy pumps the brakes a little in the Pac tourney, maybe resting our guys who've had injuries (Tubelis, Kriisa)? Or is it pedal to the metal from here on out?

I think you're right that a Gonzaga loss + us winning out = #1 overall seed regardless of what happens in the Pac tourney.

i think the number one overall seed will be decided today - if Gonzaga wins conf tournament means nothing - Zags would lock #1 overall seed.

if Gonzaga falls to St Mary's AZ would have to win out (reg season only) and they would be #1 overall seed

small chance but alas here we are so close to selection sunday not much will change anymore.

Hell yeah we should lose there, pretty much every recent Natty champ has lost in the conference tournament.

Arizona is currently on a 9 game win streak.... The last several national champions win streaks to win the 'chip...

2021 Baylor -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2019 Virginia -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2018 Villanova -- 11
2017 North Carolina -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2016 Villanova -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2015 Duke -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2014 UConn -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2013 Louisville -- 16
2012 Kentucky -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2011 UConn -- 11 (all tournament wins)
2010 Duke -- 10
2009 North Carolina -- 6 (conference tournament loss)
2008 Kansas -- 13
2007 Florida -- 10
2006 Florida -- 11
2005 North Carolina -- 6 (conference tournament loss)

Really in modern college basketball ('12 is the start of this era imo), championship teams get their loss out of the way in the conference tournament

It isn't worth the extreme energy exhausted there to get something not as important when they're already likely have the 1 seed on lock

So Purdue's loss today jeopardizes their chances for a 1 seed.

Other key games today (as 97 has dutifully been tracking): Baylor/Kansas and Auburn/Tennessee

A Kansas win has them on the inside track for a #1, and an Auburn win virtually guarantees they'll be a 1.

If either loses, the door remains ajar for Kentucky and Duke, and yes, I see that Kentucky is down to Arkansas at the moment.

Talk of who our #2 might be and I think they all would be tough. I worry more about 8-9 match up being a team like Murray St or maybe a Memphis or North Carolina.

Past that is the sweet 16 a 4-5 like Arkansas or Alabama or even an Ohio St would concern me

It surprises me that AZ having possibly four more wins than Gonzaga and the same amount of losses in a power 5 conference at the end of the season doesn't hold enough weight to get the overall one seed.

its a very interesting question and begs the notion if the committee would weight AZ if they win the next seven games, i still think Gonzaga would have to lose but its worth noting.

32-2 - reg season (by multiple games) and conf tournament champs in a pwr 5 cant be ignored.

So you're saying there's a #1 seed on the line tonight. Not in the sense that if we lose, we're suddenly a 2 seed. But that if we win, it's going to be impossible not to earn a 1.

so yes, i agree, if Arizona shits the bed down the stretch they will not be on the two line - however that would be in direct conflict to how they have performed up to this point in the season.

but that's why they play the games!!

and, even if Arizona slides out of the top 8, they most likely will still be in Duke or Gonzaga's region.
