That's because more give a shit about bball. I'll sacrifice more time and money for bball as it's a more enjoyable experience. Period.

Um...daylight savings? Which Arizona doesn’t honor. Or are those times PST?PHXCATS wrote:Where is all the complaining for the basketball game times? At UCLA 8pm, at Cal 8:30pm , at Stanford 9pm and especially at home, when the game will end after every football home game has ended in all likelihood, home vs Baylor at 9pm
For the record I’ve bitched about the start times for BB and FB equally and you continue to tell those of us who do to pound sand cause that’s what the networks want/dictate apparently.

And for the record...I’ll be at both the furd and cal games making the drive to the Bay Area twice RT over three days (2.5 hrs each way)
Why? Because the experience is better than watching on tv, it’s relatively local for me, and the team isn’t dog shit. So attending is a good use of my time and money.

I can drive to an 8 pm tip bb game in Tucson, watch it till the final buzzer, and still be home by 10:30, 3 hours max (and we don't suck). An 8 pm kickoff for football means even I would have to dedicate from about 5:30 pm to at least midnight (to watch a team that sucks).
BB would win every time.

You need to accept the fact that nobody cares. In public places when there is a UA football game on, half the time the TV's are set to baseball or any other sporting event. Only winning and the media attention associated with winning will change this, and no, it's not "if we come, they will build it."PHXCATS wrote:Alieberman wrote:Is that the amount of sold tickets?PHXCATS wrote:730 Game for Oregon/Homecoming

Most important stat of this whole article:Merkin wrote:The Growing Problem Of College Football Attendance
https://lastwordoncollegefootball.com/2 ... i2CIr99RZo" target="_blank
In 2017, attendance numbers were down substantially over 2016 numbers. The Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) saw its largest year over year drop in 35 years. In fact, the SEC, which is known for possibly the most fanatical fans in all of college football saw its attendance drop by just over 3%. Unfortunately, that doesn’t even tell the entire story.
The Wall Street Journal decided to go even a step further. They had a goal to look at the number of scanned tickets against the reported attendance. The results were fascinating. Only 71% of the reported announced attendance actually scanned their ticket to enter the stadium.

As for the team it isnt hard to understand except to fair weather fans. Fans at the games equals money from ticket sales, concessions and donations. Money equals better facilities and coach availability (HC and assistants). Better facilities and coaching equals better chances at better recruiting. Better recruiting usually means more wins.
So by not showing up you are making it much harder to fix the issues to get to more wins.

I think your argument is a great description of the fallacy of sunk costs.

Actually, the NFL slotted that one after the PAC scheduled this game. This time it’s not the conference’s fault.CatsbyAZ wrote:ASU seriously time-slotted one of their home games against a Cardinals Thursday game? How stupid?azgreg wrote:They're at the Cardinals game.

Are there enough rabid fans that go to both team's games? Anecdotally speaking, most football fans I know are rabid about college or the NFL, but not both although they keep an interest up in the other.
Raiders Fans for an example, do any of them follow a single college football team? Raiders fan where I live try to portray themselves as living the scary thug life, but are just a bunch of good guys in your neighborhood who hang out together. They sit on their cars, drink Coors Lite, and shoot the shit all night, or play pool if one has one in his garage.
Rams fans are the middle class soccer dads who have a nice tract home and has a huge Rams tent and under it a very nice pellet smoker, with stainless cutting tables with all sorts of cutting tools. 2 beer chests, one domestic, one craft brew.
There no NFL teams within 200 miles or so. The nearest college, Cal Poly is 40 miles from my house,
All I see is NFL flags, Raiders, Rams, and some guy in my hood has a Bears flag. No college flags anywhere.
The most college logos I see are the window stickers on car windows like the Oregon U going up or down the 101.

Why would I invest anything at all into what is essentially a slave/master economy, especially if there’s no chance of something that results in even the semblance of a personal payoff?
I’m supposed to spend time and money watching some poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks develop CTE so some coach can rake in millions? Why??? I have enough of a problem with that when the guy sustaining multiple head injuries is getting paid.
I find myself disliking football more and more. But at least the NFL guys are earning a paycheck and my team has a shot at something resembling a glorious outcome.

I have been to almost every Cardinals game since State Farm Stadium opened. While the Cardinals being awful plays a huge role, there were more Denver fans than any visiting team before at the stadium. Have to figure asu playing the same night war a huge factor. Or if you were a st. louis rams fan only, do you still root for them now that they're in LA?
Just interesting to me how this dynamic plays out among people. I don't know that I'd be a Bears fan if, for example, they moved to Boise.

My youngest son lives in San Diego, and although not a football fan, he said that the Chargers' fans in SD were extremely upset when they moved to LA.
But where I live in central Cali, I haven't heard anyone complain about the Raiders moving to Las Vegas. Perhaps it all depends if you live in the city where the team is located. Of course Oakland fans are probably used to it.
From here, LV is probably a lot funner destination than Oakland.

I was an LA Rams fan. Season tickets with my dad from ‘83-‘88. When Georgia fucking Frontiere intentionally destroyed the team and then claimed she couldn’t make it work in LA so she could get a sweetheart deal in St. Louis, I was heartbroken and vowed to never cheer for them again.PieceOfMeat wrote:I've always been a bit curious how being a fan of a team that jumps cities works.cats101 wrote:I agree.azcat49 wrote:That was a great read Merk. That didn’t last. I still loved the NFL and couldn’t bring myself to pick up a new team to follow. Living in NY at the time, I sort of followed the Giants and Jets, but it wasn’t the same. I had no connection to their history and really just didn’t care enough. So I still rooted for the Rams, even though they broke my heart.
But the Rams didn’t get better in St. Louis right away, so my fandom waned further. Then ‘99 happened and that all changed. They were so exciting and so fun to watch that I stopped caring what city they had in front of their name.
When they went back to being shitty, once again it became hard to care. Baseball and basketball took most of my attention, and the NFL stopped being must-see TV for me. But at the same time I had hope that a shitty team in a shitty dome in a shitty city might inspire the powers that be to move them back to LA. I had been dreaming of that since around 2003.
So when they finally announced that was exactly the plan, I was ecstatic. And I still am. They may have played in Cleveland, and they may have played in St. Louis, but to me, to 7 year old Chicat, they’ll always be the Los Angeles Rams. It is as it was meant to be.

Thanks POM. I should add that living in Chicago, I did pick up an affinity for the Bears. I’ve been to a bunch of games, and there was even a game when I was at Soldier Field, actively rooting against the Rams. It was weird, but at the time it felt right. Now though, I couldn’t imagine it.

Re: Why can't we consistently fill AZ Stadium?
I think it depends on the person. For me, when they made the first switch I was too young to notice or care. When they made the switch back to LA, I though it would bode well for the franchise, but I was worried if LA would support a football team, let alone 2 (Chargers). I also consider myself a loyal person, so my loyalty goes with the Rams, regardless of what state they're in. Maybe it's the memories, tradition, brand, logo ect. Not really the same as college sports, where typically only alumni and the locals support that program. Professional teams tend to have fans from all over. I, to this day, have never been to a Rams games in St. Louis, but a few at the Cardinal stadium.PieceOfMeat wrote:I've always been a bit curious how being a fan of a team that jumps cities works.cats101 wrote:I agree.azcat49 wrote:That was a great read Merk. Or if you were a st. louis rams fan only, do you still root for them now that they're in LA?
Just interesting to me how this dynamic plays out among people. I don't know that I'd be a Bears fan if, for example, they moved to Boise.

Very interesting, thankscats101 wrote:I think it depends on the person. I would just like to point out that I've been a Rams fan since 94 and I'm no soccer dad!!
But I was pretty much forced to be a fan (being that I was all of 5 years old) because I had a family friend play for them and I practically watched every game. Obviously 1999-2001 peaked my interest the most. It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:

Chicat, you grow up in Orange County?Chicat wrote:I was an LA Rams fan. Season tickets with my dad from ‘83-‘88.
My dad grew up in LA and was a life long die hard Rams fan. He used to tell my stories about the fearsome foursome and how Jack Youngblood played in a game with a broken leg. Growing up in Orange County, we used to go to Rams preseason practices at UCI and still have pictures with Jackie Slater, Henry Ellard, Flipper Anderson, Kevin Greene, and Jim "Chris" Everett". Actually still even have a wrist band he gave me. My dad and I would go to 1-2 games every year and it is probably some of the most memorable times I remember with him growing up as my mom and him divorced when I was young so wasnt around a ton. But he loved the Rams and I became hooked as well.
Then that fucking bitch Georgia Fronterie (Who mind you got the team because she had her husband killed. A world class swimmer drowning in like 18 inches of water in Florida?) moved them to St. Louis. My dad has threatened to find her grave and piss on it for years. When she died he sent me probably the most positive and happy email I have ever seen from him. Ripped his and my heart out to see them leave and then of course they go and win a super bowl like 5 years later after so many years of losing to the 49er's in the playoffs.
Outside of fantasy football, I really had no connection to the NFL as my team left me. I gave up the rams when they left. When they came back it was like the girl who cheated on you for someone you knew was not going to work out showing up on your doorstep saying "I am back and love you again".
I know they are good now but obviously I have been working to quit being a fan and just can not bring myself to cheer for them. Growing up Lakers were #1 but Rams were a close second. I have thought about taking my dad to a playoff game this year and surprising him and maybe that will change things. I guess to me its like if the Arizona Wildcats left Tucson. I will never forget the phone call from my dad after they left, it honestly sounded like a family member of his had died. He could not believe they left.

Downey. So, pretty much South Central, but it was actually a rose in a toilet bowl in the 80s. If you could avoid the Night Stalker, it was a pretty nice neighborhood and just close enough to the entertainment options in Orange County.Newportcat wrote:Chicat, you grow up in Orange County?Chicat wrote:I was an LA Rams fan. I know how your dad felt when the Rams left. I felt the same way when they moved, and when they traded Eric Dickerson. I told people that I didn’t stop being a fan, the Rams decided they didn’t want to be my team anymore.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Grad school buddy of mine grew up in Downey in the 80s. He always said it was a bit of a hole, but he had fond memories.
