Nothing about the players being gassed the last 5 minutes though. And 3 air balls in this time.
The UA led 62-61 with 5:23 left—after being down 10 six minutes earlier—but didn’t make a field goal the rest of the way, missing its final five shots and turning it over three times down the stretch including on consecutive possessions when down two and four points in the last 1:09 as Houston (30-4) locked down on defense.

That makes sense, but ADO can't will himself some lateral quickness, or Townsend increase his basketball IQ. Only one that can and will get better is Bryant. Quit falling for shot fakes for one.
Seems to me that is a lot on Lloyd having them out there with no help. Maybe work on a zone in the off season.
Reminds of his odd comment he made a couple weeks ago when asked if the players were tired. He said something like they need to go deeper and get more strength.

Re: Tommy Lloyd
This goes back to the argument of why we signed ADO and TT. Some will say it’s all we could afford and others will say we were targeting role players and they don’t cost as much along with its basketball and it’s relatively cheap.
Right from the tip everyone knew this was not a gaME for ADO. TT cake in and promptly lost his man in transition and gave up three each time and was immediately pulled and only got back in when CB took a nutt shot.
He should only be mad at himself for the poor eval’s of these guys. It will be interesting if he parts ways with ADO

Re: Tommy Lloyd
With the new rules regarding roster limits, I would certainly hold onto him. You can have 16 players next season, and all of them can be scholarship players. No more walk-ons, although junior Lloyd can probably remain on as one of the 16. No need to RhettRod him, being the UA pays his dad millions, he gets tuition discounts, and in-state residency.
I also doubt ADO would ever go. Go back to taking buses to games?

I think the bigger issue is that he can't stay in the game for long enough stretches to get continual good looks. He gets singled out on defense by the other teams and turns into a liability.Postmaster wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 3:04 pm The coaches need to figure out how to get ADO open shots.
If he could play passable defense then I think it would open up his offensive game opportunities.

Re: Tommy Lloyd
The thought of trying to figure out how to get ADO “open looks” is never going to happen now that you are playing good teams who know he’s our best 3 point shooter.
And because he really can’t create his own shots since defenses and his well documented defensive liabilities means he will not be seeing more than 12-15 minutes in this Tournament.

Re: Tommy Lloyd
I will never understand why CTL thinks our two weakest rotation players should be in against the other teams best players at the moments they are most rested.
Re: Tommy Lloyd
Did you watch Kelvin Sampson's presser. He said the same thing. They would iso on 3 guys when they were in and run right at them. Said V is an absolute beast the way he plays. Said Tobe was also someone they had problems with.EastCoastCat wrote: Sat Mar 15, 2025 9:05 pm Man, CTL was pissed at the presser. Players love him and coaches respect him….assisting Olympic team was a big acknowledgment imo.
CTL is a natural in media spot light as you all know. Zags did HBO series 10 years ago March to madness and some great locker room speeches by CTL…..he really was strong assistant and yet low media profile even locally….great look behind the curtain.

Re: Tommy Lloyd
Everyone has a valued role from time to time. The problem is too often Arizona has to depend on those role players beyond their roles or for extended roles because they lack depth or versatility of options.
But tonight was a great “different” style of coaching. That early gut punch hit me hard. I can’t do Drunk JMJ any longer, but I was not feeling great. But Lloyd is good at staying even, balanced, and making subtle adjustments and he quickly manipulated dynamics to favor Arizona.
I do wish Arizona would quick shrinking late. So many 6-7-8-9 point games become one possession games or worse, but this was a potential “take some punches and not back down” game needed before Duke, who is simply better than us at nearly every position. But if Love is hot and Flagg is worn down, maybe.
Lloyd earned his money tonight. So did ADO.
Roster is still a mess. All this can be true.

ADO had some fireworks on O in the 2nd half and very calmly shot 4 much needed FTs. Kudos to him. But his D is still a huge liability. Commenters were saying Ducks were hunting him in the 2nd half. Not saying he’s not an important contributor but he shouldn’t be starting. Should be coming in the spot Love or KJ.

My thought was we wanted the flexibility on offense with Henri. If Oregon were to send 2 to the ball, Henri is the outlet and keeps the floor spread for Love. He's without a doubt, the weakest defender on the team. He's the eigth man in an eight-man rotation (minutes).
So, opposing teams "target him" What the fuck else would ANY coach do - "target the weakest defender"??
And, he did get smoked once by Shelstad - a guy no one else would fail to shut down!! Oh wait - Shelstad got 245 points, and burned several cats just as badly!!!
CTL: "“Delly hit a big three, had a nice little shake. Was that a dunk on that baseline drive or not? Are we going to give you a dunk on that one? Pretty close. Okay. But those free throws were huge. You step into a game where you haven’t been playing much down the stretch and then do that.”
FACT: ADO played 18 minutes last night (sixth most), and was a significant contributor to the victory!!!
All I expect from ADO is that he gives his best effort when he's in the game, that he's a good teammate and represents the U of A well. He does that all. And NO FAN can expect more from a player than that!!!

Re: Tommy Lloyd
I find it ironic that everyone comments on Delly's defense but no one talks about CB defense. CB is a ELITE shot blocker but his defense is not on par with his offense. He did not play well last night and his two goaltends were a gift to Oregon. I think his shot is one of the best I've seen at Arizona for awhile but I also think he needs to play a little better defense. Of course he is a freshman and the word defense is probably not in his vocabulary.
